Default Do cables matter??

Are you a newbie, or maybe just interested in starting an atomic war?

The following thread should give you an idea of the passion surrounding the question you just asked.

I don't believe cables make a difference, any input?

Hope you have some fun.

Best,

Ralph

I use 14 AWG PVC insulated hook-up wire. It's the same stuff I used for wiring up my amp. 8 mOhm/metre resistance, with 105 degree insulation.

1 metre of 14 AWG wire has about 0.009dB loss in series with an 8 Ohm driver.

Regards,

Suzy

Let's see..............

Triple braided Cat-5, 16 AWG Radio Shack speaker wire, 16 AWG Carol Wire Twisted (1 or 2 pairs), 14 AWG (solid) Romex Residential Wire, etc.,

It all works and I have no particular favorite if the price is equal. Just to let you know, I've never heard any difference between wire but I'm older than dirt, so my hearing isn't so hot. Besides, and perhaps more to the point, I think that anything that gets the voltage and current from point A to point B is going to sound an awful lot alike. Your Speaker's crossover inductors and/or voice coil will have a greater effect on the sound than a few inches of internal wire, at least in my experience.

YMMV,
Terry

legendaryfrog,

You should be using the search facilities on this forum, rather than trying to start another cable thread. There's heaps of information out there, with 3 schools of thought:
1) cables make no difference
2) cables make heaps of difference
But a lot of the threads (which do have useful information in them) end up being slanging matches between one or other of the cable factions.

Incidentally 12-16awg cable, depending on mood. Mostly the same stuff that I use as speaker cable.

I don't use cable, I use ratshack 18# wire.
Incidentally - ever anyone looked inside the highly valued kef 104/2? I doubt it is more than #20 for the tweeter and midrange.

Default Wire...

14 Gauge brown polarized "Zip cord/lamp cord"......good for runs up to about 25 ft...longer I'd up the size.

You make a good point, and there are lots of highly regarded speakers using "inferior non-audiophile grade" componets. Hell, I've used them myself, without much reget.

I have had good luck by eliminating the speaker terminals entirely, straight wire from crossover to the Amp's terminals (even better would be hardwired end to end!). The best connector or terminal can never be any better than an unbroken wire.........but it CAN be worse.
Best Regards,
TerryO
