Hi flaevor, making i trial piece is always the best option.I also made several.

Depending on how smooth a finish you want you can use a clear filler like Clou G1 or porenfuller from Bergolin.I used the bergolin type before aplying the laquer.You can sand it within an hour and wil give you a mirror like finish.
