Default Tapering a transmission line...with styrofoam? Would it work?

I have the woodworking ability of a gerbil. A demented gerbil. On stupid pills.

However, I have a hot wire cutter and quite a bit of foam handy. I'm working on the following speakers:

and cutting the 2x4 to the correct taper looks to be a pain in the kiester. Could I dampen the sound while tapering the line by replacing the wood with expanded polystyrene (Bluecor insulation foam), or would this not work?

Dear Spaz,
From what I've seen of "Blue insulation foam" it should not only work, but probably work very well. I've always been meaning to get, or build, a hot wire cutter and use it for shaping a speaker cabinet and then glassing over it with cloth and epoxy. If you go for it let us know how it worked.
Good luck on your project.
Best Regards,
TerryO

You mean extruded not expanded don't you? The stuff sometimes called Roofmate or styrofoam SM or even type 4?

It must be because I can't see the expanded (bead board or popcorn) working near as well. Extruded is nice and dense compared with type 1 or type 2 expanded.

And yes it works well provided it is a vented cabinet.
