Default Open baffle headaches! (A.K.A: Spasticteapot is stupid.)

After much fiddling in The Edge, I think I found a half-decent design for the Foster woofers on sale for 3$ at Madisound. It's got a sorta-flat curve (no more than +/- 1.5db) from about 100hz up to 10khz; much as I'd like it to go lower, that's not likely an option.

However, my design, which is essentially a triangle with the point facing twoards the listener, and the driver near the point. (See the picture below). The little circle is the tweeter; the big circle is the Foster woofer.

These are designed to be inexpensive speakers for use at a local coffeehouse. (They currently have tinny crap, and will pay in coffee. They also have REALLY good espresso.) I'd like to try a pair of the El Cheapo foster woofers, plus a pair of inexpensive tweeters (perhaps the 5$ ribbons from ApexJr?) and use them with a small Teac amplifier capable of 50w/channel.

Should I stick with these?

I've also heard of great results with a Hi-Vi B3s in an open baffle. If someone can explain how to make this work, I would be exceedingly grateful. (ESPECIALLY if you can do it with a 24"x36" piece of Acrylic.)

I saw the title of this thread, and was about to consign it to Texas, then I saw it was your own work!

OK, my thoughts. Mount your cheap drivers on a triangle of acrylic, then supend that in the corner of the room, facing downwards at 45 degrees, so your triangle fits into the three planes of the corner. You can tweak the bottom end response by moving the baffle into or out of the corner, changing the gap around the outside. I'm not quite sure how you could model this, but it should work well and look very stylish.

Oh, and mine's a double espresso.

How big is this coffeehouse?

That Foster woofer has only 86dB sensitivity and only handles 25 watts.

About the size of my living room for the coffee drinking area. (The front room is even smaller.) Hence, nothing big is needed.

What are your impressions of those Foster woofers? What type of circuit are you using or running them full range?

I have'nt bought any yet; I don't own a car, and wanted to figure out how usable they'd be before buying them.

Hi,

I'm confused.
Open baffle as shown will have no bass,
they are far too near the edges of the baffle.

/sreten.

Only down to about 100hz; below that there's a sharp drop. I can send you my design in EDGE format, if you'd like.
