Hi All,

I have built a set of Zaph's L18 speakers. They cost almost exactly $500 for the pair using the Parts Express cabinets. They are wonderful speakers. I am extremely happy with them. Keep in mind that even if you buy the PE cabinets you'll need some tools like a router and a means to drill the moderately large hole for the port. If you have or can borrow those tools then great!

I can recommend the L18 as an extremely good project that is not difficult and will result in a great outcome. They were my first home-built speakers.

Hope this helps.

but could I substitute a dayton rs180 with the seas L18 on the zaph audio project? I remember him saying they measure very similarily, and the seas 27TBFCG is supposed to be better than the dayton rs28, and its also cheaper.

...any thoughts?
Substituting drivers should only be done by those experienced enough to be able to adjust crossovers accordingly. Personally I've had had success with using a Hi-Vi driver in a design that was made for a Dynaudio speaker but this had more to do with luck than experience, lol.

I guess either one will be good.

The inconsistency of the rs28 tweeter concerns me a little, which is why Im considering the seas proj. instead.

Is a further possibility. Redesign the cabinet to be a less
deep floorstander, angle the baffle slightly for less hieght.

A bit like say :

Click the image to open in full size.

You could do the same with the L18 design.

Note that cabinet design should be well braced.

Also designing it so say the bottom 1/4 is sand filled is a good idea.

Alright, think I know what Im doing...

Im going to build the modula mt's, but substitute in the 27tbfc/g for the original 27tdfc, which wouldnt require me to change the original crossover:

"The other "champion" small tweeter is the Seas H1212, which could be substituted for the 27TDFC; it's aluminum dome, physically and electrically compatible, and voices a little more like the RS28a to my ears. If you want to split the difference, try the H1212/27TBFC. "

"The 27TDFC and 27TBFC are essentially "interchangeable". "

From what Ive read, this should be able to keep up with some higher end stuff. I wonder if I'll listen to my nice senn hd600 and meier audio corda headfive headphone setup again...
Im pretty excited, and also broke!
