I have an old Janszen Z2CF hybrid Electrostatic, It have wonderful Electrostatic element flat down to 750Hz, and a 10" woofer in 90! Li closed enclosure,

Problem is that the cross-over frequency is 800Hz and the 10" cone brake-up starts as low as 1050Hz, so I'm for better 10" that will sound good up to 1.5Khz – is there such animal or I must put some 6.5" or 8" to the existing enclosure.

The original woofer (unknown brand) is paper cone and rubber surrounding, I guess Paper cone is fast and can match the fast electrostat at x-over point, but today I can see more and more 'special' cone material like fiberglass in the VISATON TIW250. Is it possible that non-paper cone can sound good at say 1 k-2 kHz?

In most specs, I see there are recommendations to say 20Li closed enclosure. Can I put these drivers in my 90li box?

Any advice will be welcome, I'm feeling quite lost now :xeye:

Hi,

I've never heard of your speakers and can't find any info on them.

You need to know far more about ther current driver and the
c/o to remotely consider trying any other 10" driver in its place.

A paper 10" will begin "break up" at around 400Hz, but this
also helps it maintain smooth output into the midrange.

A driver for a 20L closed box would not work in 90L.

The seas H1209 might possibly work with major modifications.

Thanks Sreten for for the info,

The specs for the current driver:
10"
Total system resonanse: 38Hz
Q Factor :1.1
Impedance: 4 ohms
Voice coil daimeter: 50mm

Cross over is now active L-W 24db/oct at 750Hz.

With a nice big cabinet volume available to you, and an active crossover for level adjustment, I'd probably go with

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=297-430

Nice (relatively) clean top end behavior, and well suited to a 90L sealed box. Just what the doctor ordered, and looks like a pretty nice driver in general to boot!

Hi,

Hardly fixes the breakup problem its supposed to fix does it ?

Hopefully those specs are in box ?
Q is a little high but 38hz is very low for inbox resonant frequency,
consequently good if slightly boomy in room bass with good extension.

Be hard to get a driver to those specifications, must be low efficiency.

What is your opinion of the bass end of things ?

Hi Sreten,

The seas H1209 specs look nice. Will it work in 90li closed box?
I'm sure the aluminum cone is good for the bass response,
But how it will be in the mid? (500-900Hz), isn't it better to have a paper cone for blending it nicely into the very fast transient response of the electrostatic element?

I don't see any problem with the higher frequency fast break-up of the aluminum cone, since I can deal it with my active cross-over (I use 24db/oct and a notch filter to deal the cone break-up)

I don't have a boomy bass, my room is very big, but if it was perfect bass for me, I wouldn't bother replacing it ;).

Can I use two 6.5" in the same box?

Thanks for helping,

Avi
