Default Help me find a good speaker project

Hi!

I want to build a good pair of full range loudspeakers for music listening.
I'm searching for a bass reflex floorstander,2 or 3 ways, using cheaper drivers (for example Seas Prestige PRICE RANGE).
I would like to have an 8"-10" woofer standing in (a compact) 50-60 liters box.
I would expect from them good bass, midrange and highs clarity,
dynamics etc.

If you know a finished and tested project that you think it could suit my needs, please do not hesitate to tell me!(I'm not very experienced with crossover tweaking so a tested project would be a wiser choice)

Best Regards,
Nick

Why do you need a 8-10" driver and why does it have to be 3 way ?

3 way means more complex crossover, something you want to stay away from.

What kind of amp do you have ? What is the power output of it ? Are these just for audio listening or is it also for home theater ?

You could check out a few of the offerings on this site,

http://www.htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php4?f=39

I haven't listened to them, but they have a big following there, aswell as good support through the forum. They use mostly the Dayton RS drivers available through Parts express in the states, which as long as you get your order shipped via USPS is roughly the same as ordering from somewhere in Canada.

That said, I agree with J' you might be better served going with slightly better drivers in a 2-way design and then DIY yourself a sub of which there are countless designs available. For 2-way designs check:

http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/

and here:

http://www.zaphaudio.com/

For starters anyways

RJ what is that? Looks like all Dayton? Nice concept with the woofer array. And is that a carpet "veneer?" Sorry for the sidebar here folks - I'm just very curious about that speaker.

Yes, all; Dayton drivers;
4 DA175's
RS52 Dome Mid
3/4" Dayton Neo front press fit.

That finish is a quart and a half of ceiling tile grains sold by Zinsser and mixed with a gallon of gloss white paint, then 2 coats of Poly.

When sunlight hits it in the afternoon it takes on a white quartz like look. Very nice and a very cool look.
I went for a rock like finish because the inside of the box is lined with 1/4" cement board used for ceramic tile backer board.
The speakers are very heavy and they're also sealed but the bass is just fantastic.

I don't know if the little bumps affect the diffraction but they sound crystal clear. The crossover is by Pete Schumacher on the PE board.

Well sweet set-up - have you posted a build post/x-over schematic etc? Would be nice to see. Not too many designs out there anymore with dome mids.

I've had similar ideas for a floorstander - mainly with the woofer array, but that will have to wait until I have a bigger place. Currently I'm planning a "knock-off" of Zaph's SEAS all aluminum design, substituting the DA175s for the L18s to save $$ (gonna stick with the 27TBFC/Gs though). I just think adding a few more woofs would be totally cool.

I'm guessing you used the dome mid to avoid cone break-up in the woofers, and/or needed to cross very high to the tweets? What are the x-over frequencies?

jleaman, my mistake, when I said 8-10" I was reffering to the 3-way version (I want only one driver since the price grows considerably higher when using 2 per speaker).
For the 2-way one or two 7-8" midwoofers would be enough.

BUT, I really want a floorstand for enhanced bass.(F3 around 30-35hz)

The amp shall be bought after building the speakers.

Tristanc1, I know those sites but the floorstanders from there are using older drivers (for example the Tempo project) and others are more expensive. I'm begining to think that I can't find a 3-way project with good and cheap drivers. At first I was thinking at RS225 RS52 + tweeter(Seas or Dayton), because they have a low price, but these drivers require complex xovers, high slopes, notches, and the RS225 won't give its best in a ported 50L enclosure. I was told that using the RS225 in a 50L ported box would:
Quote:
50L at Fs essentially rounds out the roll off, but doesn't actually approach a true bandpass 4th order slope. And the Q is high, with it very possibly resulting in a hump from ~40-80Hz of a couple dB.
RJ, those speakers look nice but there are too many drivers and this means greater costs.

FourDegrees11, first sugestion is complex it uses a passive radiator, and possibly expensive.
The Selah looks nice, I'll have to see more about it.
The Veritas has 2x10" again expensive and the F3 a little bit high.
I'll have to take better look at the Vifa tower and the Waveguide TMM.

Peerless make a few 8 " drivers that balance good bass and nice mids, simple passive XO to a 25mm tweeter V line / or cheaper peerless, all within the price range, good old fasioned Danish quality speaker, exceptional bandwith with the V line super tweeter to 35K, and fairly easy to get right.

Another option to look at, good luck
