I'm getting SoundEasy soon and need help with deciding what to get to measure T/S parameters (among other measurements). I'll be using the berhinger ecm800 mic and 802 preamp. Still deciding on a audio card.
Do I need a wallin jig or will a multimeter work? What specific ability should I look for in the multimter? Any old multi from Home Depot for $50 be good enough? If I have to use the wallin is this: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage....WebPage_ID=110 the kind of close tolerance resistor I need? I gather SE has it's own signal generator, but that a signal counter was still a good idea. I found this: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/481...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG but it's way too expensive. Where can i find a cheap one? Thanks for any advice on gathering the correct tools. BTW what is good online electronics store? Radio shack seems to pretty much just consumer electronics now... |

There is no need for a Wallins jig for SE, that’s one of the reasons I like it so much better than SW. In the SE manual you will find the schematic for the probes, there are a very simple voltage divder, and you really do not need these either, but it can help save you audio card in case of an oops. A 100 ohm resistor will work fine, I use three 1Ks in paralell (sp) to get 333 which gives more of a constant current.
As for a voltmeter, most today are about the same, a high input impeadance normal even for the el cheapo pocket digital meters. I have a few Flukes and HPs and I still use my Radio Slacker more than high dollar name brands. Its simple and it works, just toss the probes that come with it and get some decent probes. As for a frequency counter, you really will not need one, the freq generator in SE is accurate enough that you will not have to back test. Besides the real reason for the freq counter is for obtaining the TS parameters where you’ll need a minimum of one decimal place resolution at resonance. Many of the counters go to a two digit resolution at that low of a count. And besides that, SE will get your T/S parameters for you with out it. |
