Hey,
Here is a very easy and cheap idea: Think about plastic side tables you can get for 5 bucks. I can put one or two really heavy bricks on top of them. Tables should handle the weight. The heavy bricks will be coupled to the speakers with spikes and the large mass will help to damp the oscillation of the cabinets. On the other hand, the legs of these cheap plastic tables are pretty elastic. This may serve to decouple the whole thing from the floor and neighbors. Everything will be sitting on thick carpet, with concrete underneath (at least I think so). How do you think?? |

Was the idea really stupid or would it look pretty unesthetical?

cheap stands, good cheap stands or well designed good performing cheap stands? Re you talking about metal legged plastic topped "tables"?
There are lots of good stands that are cheap that are good. One of my faves are chimney flue pipes or similar (or concrete flues"), glued together with Tightbond glue. Use some threaded rod and some connectors. UHF magazine showed how to do it years ago, maybe somebody has a picture. If not I'll draw something up.

Really cheap, very easy to build. Maybe not as aesthetical as your design but idea consist of puting the things on top of each other. Since I don't have time for neither building something fancy nor experimenting even simple stuff, first I have choosen to ask opinions based on simple physical principles. This is sort of thing, about which experienced people can make points even before trying.
No metal legs. Only plastic, so pretty flexible in "parallel to floor direction". The reaction of boxes to the driver kicks should also be in this same plane. |

I often wondered if you could get a length of heavy duty cardboard tube, like the stuff that carpet and cushion floor comes on, cut 2 identical lengths, but a piece of ply or MDF on one end, fill it about 1/2 full of sand, seal it inplace with a " plug " of some type, then put an other piece of plywood on for a top.
This would be a real cheap, but possibly good speaker stand. You could veneer or paint it too. I've been wanting to try this, just haven't gotten around to it yet. If I do it I'll let you know. |

How about toilet bushings and 4" PVC?
Or, if you're me, you just weld the silly things. Rebar is cheap. |

I've just welded two tripod stands for my mother...
But I have good experience with 2" thick 15"x15" concrete tiles under the speakers with three little felt feet inbetween, it seems like with this aproach it doesn't matter much what is placed under the tiles... And I can tell, I live in an appartment building practically made from cardboard.... ![]() As for good sound, just make sure the speaker feels completely stable when you rock the top of the cabinet a bit....

Hmm.. You know, I could just cast some stands out of solid pewter. That should be heavy enough, right? |

Howdy again, All "funnin" aside, the Parts Express heavy duty stands are a raging bargain at their price.
