5" Scan Speak Revelator + Vifa Ring Radiator - reads like it would be an incredible build and the crossover section is fascinating - pretty much a cost-no-object/no-holds-barred design for a compact system. For me it's become not whether to build a Zaph design, but choosing which one!

Zaph strikes again...impressive.
Can anyone explain how to design a ladder delay network? I was thinking of doing something similar, but have only been able to find an old obscure article about a Tannoy "time delay unit" (http://www.hilberink.nl/codehans/tannoy34.htm) cheers, Pete McK |

Thank you for the comments. At your link, the one on the bottom looks like a normal 2nd order delay network. What I did was considered a 1st order delay network. If you follow the connections, the layout is similar. There seems to be some interest on how I came up with the values, so maybe I'll update the page with a little info when I get time.

Hi, I'm wondering if Mr Zaph.. John Krutke is still reading this thread?
If so, thanks very much John for your great Zaph site , I'm a regular 'lurker' there. (Comments from anyone welcomed too, of course.) I would love to build the ZD5's but as a retired 'relative newbie', that project is probably beyond my capabilities and budget (drivers~$750AU?), so I heed your warning. (still $750 less x/o, etc for worlds best performance is cheap in my view). I think I read somewhere on your site that you may consider designing a 'cheaper' 2way 5.5inch system? ...."This system is a bit outside of my normal high value tendencies," (quote from ZD5 page). Having read your analysis of the various 5.5's tested, the Seas CA15RLY seems good and 1/3? the price of the Revelator. So, I'm wondering if you would consider a 'newbie-friendly' design based on that or similar? Any comments very much appreciated! Regarding the ZD5 page, (may I quote you again?): "Still, it's not too expensive, and these drivers live up to their price while most other big dollar drivers are easily outperformed by Asian manufactured drivers at 1/4 the cost." - hmm, any clues here on which you are referring to? Also, your L15RLYP/27TFFC design was amazing and an 'eye-opener' for me on how you controlled the horrid 'raw response' breakup of the woofer! Thank you very much, Grant (Au), and best wishes. |

On this page, if you follow the link to
'Time Delay Report by Alex Garner', There's an old Tannoy paper , somewhat rambling, about delay networks; available as 17 pdf pages. Unfortunately the actual schematic (Fig 8) is missing. http://www.hilberink.nl/speaker.htm Pete McK |

Hi Grant,
Gee, not yet-another 5.5" 2 way. There's already the HiVi W5 project- http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker19.html and then there's the Silver Flute project http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker13.html and the SEAS L15 project http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker12.html If you're looking for a project with the SEAS CA15RLY, there's the Dennis Murphy CAOW1 http://murphyblaster.com/content.php?f=CAOW1.html or with the cheaper SEAS tweeter alternative, Roman Bednarek's Calypso http://www.rjbaudio.com/Calypso/calypso.html As you can see, I'm a bit of a DIY loudspeaker trainspotter, but really there are lots of high value 5.5" 2-way designs out there. As John was alluding to, there are plenty of other drivers out there which have a fanatical or cult following amongst DIYers, but the hard data doesn't it back it up. But we'll not name names- where there's nothing nice to be said, saying nothing at all. I made up my own mind after reading the tweeter mishmash, 5.5" and 7" midwoofer roundup tests. |

Yeah, I reckon the SEAS CA15RLY looks like it would make a good 2.5 way, using an EBS alignment - Vb 25L, Fb ~42Hz,
or as a 2 way, Vb 15L, Fb ~ 40Hz Pete McK |
