Default best upgrade for Dynaudio 50....

guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading Dynaudio 50 to a higher spec 52se. Do you have any ideas what need to be changed except for driver & tweeter.

cheers

Hi,

Possibly the cabinet and crossover ? I'd say its not a cost effective exercise.
Its one thing making up SE versions for marketing, another being any better.

The most dramatic improvement observe was to use bitumen sheets to dampen the baffle/cabinets walls, back of driver units, brought out more microdetails. Foam seems to work less well. Then, i would change the capacitors and resistors, and maybe add smaller bypass capacitors. It really up to your taste, but a starting point is solen. Mundorf silver/oil is going to pamper you. Last, get some nice wires, twist them or litz them for the woofer and get thin magnet wire/ silver wire for the tweeter. Oh, solder the joints instead of using the crimps.

This is what i have done for 2 speakers, a AE Aegis 3 and a Von Vr1. In the end, the Aegis sounded as good as the VR1. Why? because they both use similar price- point drivers, despite the difference in retail. Thats also the reason why my next speakers are going to be DIY.

Forgot to say, i did hear the 52se and i do admit i prefered them over the others i audtioned - B&W the're pretty good but I am sure you can get pretty close in quality with the mods i mentioned but there are 2 considerations:

1) Used value of your speakers should you choose to sell will be lower unless you found some unyieldingly generous buyer.

2) Once you start operating on your speakers, you may never stop.
