Ding Ding we have a winner. The Zaph B3S Monitors With the PE sale right now these little $7 speakers make a great cheap project.

Thanks for the tip on the boiled linseed oil. I'll give that a try, thanks!
Which just goes to show that I spend way too much time thinking about this stuff and reading this board.

What kind of wood is that? Is is curly maple by any chance? Regardless, the linseed oil will make the wook look natural but will bring out the grain. My great uncle was a sculptor and that's what he used on every single piece of wood work he ever did and it was always impressive how the oil enhanced the grain on every kind of wood he ever worked with. Makes me want to build my next project out of wood.

Yep, that's curly maple. I was at Home Depot with the intention of building these out of pure MDF. But when I found a really nice piece of curly maple in with the "regular" maple boards, I decided that MDF wasn't what I'd be coming home with. The curls are much more pronounced than they look in the photo. Hopefully the linseed oil will enhance them even further.

I understand that can get you put in the dog house, but I'm not 100% sure of that...

Update:
I've got the 2 1/2 size (surround) boxes running now and plan to finish the other three tomorrow. If I had known how wonderful the B3S's sound in the 1/2 size box, I'd just done that for all of the 5 speaker HT system. I'm extremely happy, absolutely the best dollar for dollar speaker I've heard yet.

And of course the usual thanks to Zaph for his xover work and extensive testing that led me to these drivers!!!
