Ì´m planing a new speaker project for amps with less than 30 watts output power

Bass Midrange: PHL 2460 (<800Hz)
Mids: ATC SM 75-150S (800 - 4000 Hz)
Tweeter: Raven R2(>4000 Hz)

or

Bass Midrange: PHL 2460 (<1500 Hz)
Mids/tweeter: ESG1 ribbon (>1500 Hz)

What would you think is the better sounding system?
Has anyone made experience with one off those speakers?

regards

Troels, I think we are agreeing again;)

Gunter, go for the ATC mid, you won't be disappointed, and I have seen others on this forum recommending the Raven and the PHL, but I have not heard them, so I can't comment personally.

However, I have always been a bit wary about the tight dispersion from ribbons, at least in the ones I have heard. It might be worth checking up on this first, unless you only want to listen from one chair!

Hello!
Well, I'd go for ATC. But beware, despite suggested range from
400 Hz, it'a actually applicable from 800 Hz and above.
I've spoken many times with a guy who sells both Raven and
PHL in my country and he said that this is the best combination.
But yes, SM-150S is probably the best midband available, this
is actually the only dome that has duouble suspensions that
helps avoiding rocking, which is the major problem with all
dome mids. So, add ATC to PHL and Raven.
As for R2 - it works superbly with ATC. I cannot imagine any better
configuration. One of my favourite tweeters (HD3P) won't go with SM 150S because of the restricted freq. range
:xeye:

As for bass-midrange, I would consider ATC driver. Well, PHL is fast, detailed, but I'd be tempted to have 'short coil-long gap'
config of ATC.

btw. I've came across such a config:
R 2 for highs ( > 4000)
SM150S for (> 800)
SB274 (don know - SC or LC)
SB100-375 SC.

There's one problem with ATC dome - it is expensive. That's a fact.
And it's loud, actually, only a problem if U going to use it with their own SB274 as a midbass ;)

Tbla, U are right - ATC has an allround quality. But I would add...
...if U use SM150 above 800 Hz what U get and what really counts is freedom from any audible distortion. It is utterly
linear between 800 and 4 KHz. I listened to focal, dynaudio,
audax, domes, cones and everything I could...but ATC is simply
unbeatable.

Oh, if U use R2 be prepared to have very narrow G-spot, SM150
has fantastic dispersion but U know, R2...ribbon. You can't have
a cake and eat it...

Thank´s for your good advice.

I´m going to order the ATC SM 75-150S. The Raven R2 and the PHL I bought 6 month ago.

Is it possible to create a low and high pass with the ATC SM 75-150S with a 6 db/oct. filter, when I choose a frequency range from 800 Hz up to 4000Hz.

thanks and regards

Günter

btw. How do U like your R2? :)
Actually, nowadays I am listetning to a pair of esl's, but feel
that finally I will have to move on..and go for something really
serious.
Where are U ordering ATC from? I am asking because, I just realized (few minutes ago) that there's no ATC reseller in Poland,
so I will have to buy directly from UK or maybe from another location...
Actually I decided to sell everything (esl's, monoblocks) and
go for ultimate DIY chain...
Plextor cd-rom transport, tweaked (blue led maybe?)...feeding AD1853 dac's (i simply like the way they sound)...and some hybrid amplification (6H6P/bipolar)..and, yes, ATC bass, mid, don't know yet whether R2 or something else. Unfortunately, HD3P
is out of my list, due to the 5KHz required xover freq.

I had somewhere crossover schematics for SM150/R2, but
because of some Xperiences with my Pc (thanks Bill  )
lost all...

Greetz,

Hello Spherion,

I like my R2 very much. They are sweet and very detailed.
The only problem of this tweeter is the non linearity of
frequences below 5000 Hz. At 2500 Hz the R2 loses 6 dB in comparison to 4500 Hz.

Very sweet tweeters are:

Poineer TAD ribbon tweeter
Fostex T925 tweeter

but both can be used only >5000 Hz.

I haven´t heard the ESG tweeter. The are very linear, but there ribbon has more weight.

I bought the ATC from Wilslow Audio in UK. They cost 717 GB pound incl. VAT and delivery.

Thanks!
Well, I also thought about Wilmslow Audio. Just saw their website
and another idea came to my mind - Volt drivers :)

As for ATC, 717 pounds for S version? Delivery in Europe?

For starters, I wanted to use HD3P, especially because thry're
cheap here in Poland. But it simply won't go below 5.5 KHz...
...well I wonder sometimes whether would such a 'hole'
between ATC and HD3P bother me or not.

I had very good freq. measurements of SM150S but it all got lost
in the mess of disc formatting :bawling:

atc mid

as i have stated before, i own a pair of atc scm 100sl passiv.
the crossover point is 380hz between bas and mid.......
and i can assure you - i have NEVER heard this middome do one thing wrong, the two drivers are perfectly integrated.......!
but one must remember that the original filter isn't a 6db/oct.
its 12db/oct upper and lower pass with "full correction"
believe me it works.......and for that kind of money it should...!

best regards

Volt driver

I´ve got a Volt driver for my bass. I use two Volt Studio Range B2508 each in a sealed 28 dm³ box. It is very fast and powerfull.
The best bass driver I ever heard, also Fs is only 50 Hz. I use a 6 db activ filter with an 100 W/8ohm silid stat mono amp. Simply great!

Günter

You mean the one with 8mm Xmax (B2500.8)? I've been thinking about
this driver for bass but came to a conclusion that I need something BIGGER (like 12" or 15").
However, Volt drivers are really noteworthy - REL uses them,
for example.

Well, for my next home speakers (when I sell esl's) bass driver
will be probably mounted in a sealed enclosure...
...selection of drivers is pretty wide, but I have three types:
ATC SM 375 SC
Volt (one of the 'Radial' series probably)
and Visaton TIW360 (very cheap here in Poland for the specs)

Don't know yet whetrer I'll use active correction, but if I will,
I'll rather go for all-active amp/Xo circuitry ;)
