I need a small bookshelf for an apartment with very thin walls.
I like the idea of the swans and have heard them. I like the idea of BR-1 so I can start down the dangerous road of DIY. Any thoughts? Anybody heard them both? |

I have the BR-1s.
I thought the manual gave a great introduction to DIY speaker building. They were also really easy to put together. One warning is that they are pretty inefficient. They sound much better with a powerful amp (my gainclone works well). Don't try to drive them with a T-Amp. The sound is pretty good for the price. Don't expect audiophile quality for $150, though. |

Once you get them you can go further down the DIY path and implement Dennis Murphy'd BR-1 crossover modification:

When you consider the cost of a finished cabinet (with nice grils and terminals), amplifier, speakers and crossover, the Swan M200's are difficult to beat. I have a pair, and have considered buying another pair just for the cabinets and amplifier. They are a great value.
The TN28 tweeter used in the M200s is readily available at madisound and partsexpress, but I haven't found the woofer anywhere. I think an interesting project would be to buy the M200s, and upgrade only the woofer. It's already top mounted, and you could easily fit a 15cm wide driver with little modification. The Dayton RS150S-8 would be a great choice. Dan |

Thanks for both replies.
Thanks for the murphyblaster site! I hadn't seen that one. Owdi, I had also thought about replacing the drivers. Can you tell me if the Swans have a two channel or four channel internal amplifier? Do you have specs on the crossover? |

I remember reading somewhere it's two channel, the mid is 8 ohm nominal, and the xover freq is around 1800hz. I haven't cracked mine open to check though, but nearfield measurements of the tweeter seem to confirm it.
