If you need a kit have you tried www.theloudspeakerkit.com.au?
Are you happy to build the enclosures and make the crossovers etc or do you want it in kit form?

If you are happy to make them yourself here are a couple of designs in your pricerange:

You could also ask Rabbitz who frequents here as he does kits as well (not including enclosures) www.rzaudio.com

I wouldn't post my question on a forum called "diyaudio" if I'm not happy to DIY :)

thanks for the sites :)

Hi Jarthel
If you don't mind spending a little more you could take a look at the JV-800 kit from Jaycar Electronics.
Catalog number CS-0800, $1200 / pair.
Cheers
Rob

can't find it on their website.

can you tell me what brand of speakers are used? how about the cabinet? mdf? real wood (not sure of the correct term) like oak or some other hardwood?

thank you.

Hi
Apparently it's still under development and will be released to coincide with a series of articles to be published in Silicon Chip magazine. If you have their current (2006) catalog, it's on page 249.
If not, rather than quote chapter & verse from the catalog, email me and I'll send you a scan.
Cheers
Rob

To whet your appetite.
Just for the record, I have no affiliation with either Jaycar or Silicon Chip magazine.
Cheers

I can assure you that the final speaker should not end up anything like that ! That pic just has everything WRONG with it and the Jaycar guys know that !!

They still want to try to use the ribbons, because they have a whole heap of them, but the darn things can't be crossed in much lower than 7000Hz, so even in a 3-way they could have real issues !!! Also, using the Vifa D26NC as shown, just ain't going to cut it with a pair of 8" so they have to find a 2" dome or something, the Jaycar one is ok but expensive!! The 8" drivers themselves are very ordinary too, from what the Jaycar guy told me, and I've seen one first hand, not nice, pressed metal frames etc !!

So basically, I would avoid that speaker !!

Also, WES sells the DST drivers and other components, but if you can't get trade status, then you will get them cheaper from RZAudio. (see link elsewhere in thread) Peter is a fellow DIYer, and a good guy !!

Its mainly a problem I have with paid reports ;-))

The previous Jaycar kits were nothing special, JV-80 etc. Spend on some good drivers and a bit of cabinet work, you can get way better with far less outlay.

I have nothing against Jaycar drivers, I have a few speakers around the place that use them. There have been a couple of gems among them over the years. I also have some drivers in the cupboard that I tried but haven't thrown out yet
Even my main speakers use a Jaycar bass, and they do exactly what is asked of them and do it well.
I just don't think the designs were particularly well implemented, although often the designer was given "bulk" drivers to work with, which doesn't help. Can't make a silk purse ...etc.

Must be hard when someone says, .. we have an excess of these and those, design something with them !!

Have to agree on this.
This is what we have! make something out of it.
Too many compromises.

Saw those ribbon's a while ago on special (really cheap)
7K crossover??? not easy to match to anything.

allan

ps did anyone try the foundtec ribbon's yet.
