Out off curiosity: Does anyone know which drivers were used in the JBL Control1? Are the custom-made or what?
Whats the general impression of these speakers? Regards TroelsM

They are custom drivers.
They are nice little monitors. Here in the UK they can be found cheaply if you know where to look and for the price the performance is decent enough. They need a sub though. There are quite a few varients around.

Hi,
general impression of the C1 in hifi terms : (I was forced to listen to them at length at Richersounds by a friend who was interested in them, for reasons I found unfathomable. Turns out later he got his hearing tested and he suffers from serious treble hearing loss) The above should be a clue : no bass, relentless crude treble, overall a very rising thin response - possibly suit a ceiling corner. Could be Eq'd to sound half pleasant. Though with no bass and the rising response they do go louder than you would expect and can take some juice in the process. Depends what you want to use them for. |

Certainly not what you'd call hifi but also pretty much indestructable in my experience.

well Fostex/Foster had a similar full range setup (was it an FE83 or similar?). B&W also had their Leisure Monitors if I remember.
No experience with any ogf them (other than hearinmg them very casually a long, long time ago), but, based on what I have known about JBL in the past (late 1980's), the LMs and the little Fosters should kick their butt all over. In defense of the JBL s though, they should be absolutely tough as nails.. Reboxing or rebuilding some Realistic/Optimus 77s or similar should with better drivers mau be a solution.

Bear in mind that the Control series aren't really meant for hi-fi applications.
They're great as personal stage monitors for keyboard players for example, or for small room sound reinforcement or cueing monitors, but there are many better designs for music reproduction. |

I have used the Control 1 a LOT in theater sound, often 2 dozen or more at a time. They were choosen for the small size, rugged build and coloration of the sound.
For that, they worked very well. Also for a solo monitor at the mixing console. A buddy had a pair of Control 1 mounted on brakets in the corner between wall and ceiling. Gave them some bass. Not Hi-FI, but fun.

Hi.
From what i can hear they are build to be loud and tough. That fine! I´m still interested. I have a nice setup for the "HiFi"-part, but one is always looking for new fun party speakers (or is that only me?) It seems to me that the "woofer" would be the biggest challenge. Any ideas on a (cheap) woofer that could be used in a Control1-clone (cloning seems to big the shizzle..). Regards TroelsM

If you want some fun party speakers, I would just buy some cheap used floorstanders. The Control 1 don't do parties without a sub. Unless you like rubbish sound.

The sub is a must. Always. Of course.
