On a whim, I decided to experiment with a cheap 12" waveguide ( http://www.musicsupplycenter.com/Pro...Code=810%2D002 ) and an eminence compression driver ( http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=290-446 ).
The sound is clear, starlingly so, but I need to mate it to a woofer to get an idea of how it would sound as a speaker. For my trials,I used a cheap CX2310 active crossover and my karlson K-15 for the bottom end. I tried various crossover points from but none seemed to gel (probably due in part to the rreverb sound of the karlson). The mismatch seemed to occur at any crossover above 200 Hz (but I don't dare running this compression driver crossed over at 200Hz in the long term) I'm wondering if there are any affordable 12" (or smaller) drivers out there that would work well with my wave guide in a 2 way configuration crossed over at around 1000 Hz to make a compact 2 way system that can work down to an honest 50Hz or so . I can tolerate about 2 cu. ft. per woofer enclosure. I do realize that I'll probably have to use an L-pad or go active to match the output levels. Thanks

Part of the problem may be the CD (constant directivity) nature of the horn.
As freq increases, the directivity stays conastant (wide) instead of beaming more and more like a direct radiating tweeter, with the result that the treble response slopes downward. Therefore the XO requires an inverse response that progessively cuts the lows on the tweeter to give a flat response. This is done with a resistor paralleled with a capacitor in series with the tweeter.

Good point to note. I'll keep it in mind when (attempting
But what I'm trying to find out is reccomendations for an affordable (around $50 each plus or minus a few) woofer that will work well from 40-50Hz to around 1000 Hz in a relatively compact direct radiating package that I could use to make a pair of compact 2 ways. thanks

Check Parts Express for their Eminence drivers.

Check Eminence drivers at Parts Express.
Their site is down now, but at http://www.eighteensound.com/ there's are a couple of 2-way kits (under Applications IIRC); those XO's might be a good place to start. Also the waveguide speaker XO at Zaphaudio.
