Hey Guys and Gals, I'm just trying to make up some budget tower style speakers for home, this will be my first dive into home audio, but I am quite into Car audio and currently run an IDQ15" sub and have a set of DLS UP36 3 way splits, so I do like nice sound. Now here is the challenge at this moment I'm currently just looking for drivers cheap ones, I've been looking at some of the Jaycar/Response stuff thats about my budget of course cheaper would be great. Now they will be going into a 6x6 metre room and will be used for movies and music, and size isn't to much of an issue being sensible of course, a sub setup will come later probably and I will probably find an amp capable of about 2 x 100wrms. I hope you guys can help me as I really don't know where to start as far as home audio goes.
Thanks heaps guys. p.s. I'm sorry this has probably been asked before but I did search and didn't really find what I wanted. |

Just thought I'd add you can get some of this Morel Car audio equipment very cheap over here in AUS.
http://www.fastfoursforumscarclub.co..._pricelist.pdf I would possibly look at the tweeters but I'm not sure maybe a bit more then I wanted to spend considering I've heard very good things about some of the vifa tweeters. Thanks again Luke |

Hi,
Cheap drivers and no idea about hifi crossover design = poor sound. Cheap drivers can be used, but you need measuring equipment and a very large dose of knowing exactly what you are doing to achieve good results. Far field listening in a real room is far more complicated than setting up car systems, and car systems are a lot more flexible + less critical. If a sub is going to be added a simple pair of stand sealed two ways is best. If no sub is going to be added a floorstanding MTM vented two way is best. (Or a floorstanding TMM 2.5 way) Halfway house between the two is a stand mounted sealed MTM. Going cheap on the drivers doesn't make a lot of sense given the time you will spend making a decent pair of cabinets (and stands). Seas + Vifa are available in australia, checkout : http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker16.html |

I also think it is a good idea to say what you call 'budget'! That term means quite different things to different people depending on their circumstances!

if typically Morel, then they are excellent and the crossovers are quite good as well. The biggest problem is making sure you have complete parameters.

I'm liking the look of the Waveguide TMM, and the Vifa XG18/ Seas 27tdfc MTM from the Zaph webpage, the cost of conponents is about the top of my budget, any other suggestions guys otherwise I may try one of those.

I think what we mean when we say "budget is in the eye of the beholder" is that you name a real dollar figure.
For example, when I build a budget system, I mean to spend about $200-300 USD on components. When someone else means to build a budget system, he spends $1-2K USD. Still a third person might mean to spend $30-40 USD. All are legitimate, and all can result in fine sound reproduction, given the quid pro quo, sine qua non, et. al., usw, usw... If you name a dollar figure, people here can direct you where you want to go. Dave

Around $200 US for drivers and crossover components is about my budget with a max of about $300 US. I'm too concerned about cabinet costs as it doesnt have to look that good along as they are perform I don't really care what they look like.
Thanks again Luke |
