Default Interesting experiment inspired by Tubee

A few weeks ago I came upon one of Tubee's thread regarding a diffuser device on his tweeter. It looks extremely interesting as I imagine it would give a 3d sound. Today I whipped up a ghetto diffuser of my own. I used the bottom of a toy cup, some clay, some tape and some creativity to hook it up.

The tweeter is a cheap peerless tweeter I bought from partsexpress awhile ago, on the bottom is a 6.5" fullranger (insignia bookshelf).

ps. tilt your head to look at the pics

You're probably wondering how does it sound.
Well, I do hear some extension of the top end with the diffuser on, not much, but it's there.
Right now I'm using winamp to do the ghetto crossover, the tweeter is playing from 3.4khz and up with a 2nd order. The fullranger plays below 3.4khz with also a 2nd order filter.
Compare to the fullranger playing fullrange, I like the sound with the tweeter on top. Even with only 1 speaker playing, I can hear a bit of depth of the sound. The fullranger sounds like the depth ends where the speaker's baffle is. I'm sure it's different when I'm in stereo. But, there's definitely more depth with the tweeter and diffuser on top.

I'll play around with it some more for the rest of the day.

Regarding the depth of field with the fullrange driver and enclosure..

You might want to take a look at my corespondance here:

Hi Scott,
thanks for chiming in

is this what you wanted to get across?

Stuffing should increase resistance and subjectivly "suck the life" out of the drivers.
at the moment, i'm purely interested in the voicing of this experiment. I thought midrange was more directional than the lower notes?

So far, I'm really liking the idea of having the tweeter on top, especially with the diffuser. As I lower the crossover point of the top tweeter, the diffuser seems to have more effects.
The sound of the fullranger is definitely more coherent and "one" compare to the experiment tweeter and the diffuser. But, at the same time, when I look away from the speaker, the fullranger sounds a bit more localized and doesn't have the depth and dimensional of true voicing.

Again, this is only in mono, not stereo. So things might be very different when start playing with both speakers in stereo.
The voicing of the speaker reminds me a bit of my dipole speaker. But, this experimental speaker has a wider horizonal dispersion on the top end, which is something that I prefer. It's also very musical and sounds pleasant so far with the soft music.

More updates later.

yup!

axial response is important to field of depth, but so is driver linear decay and how it is altered.

if stereo images are not projected well behind the loudspeakers then something is wrong and its likely a stuffing problem - but yes try them in stereo first (..though you should have depth with a single speaker, just piddly little of seperation).
