Default best place for ports on bipole?

where is best place to put ports?

on front and back?
just front?
just back?
or at bottom firing down?

they will be a aways from wall a bit cause mid driver is in open baffle.

Thanks!

I am guessing it does not matter as long as the port is one wavelength (of the port tuning) from the driver...but that is just a guess. I am trying to learn more about bipoles myself.

Default Definately in back

when in front, the driver can "couple" with the horn / vent / port at certain freq.s ... and its like the driver is pushing whole the port is sucking = wasted watts, dead sport in the response curve, etc., etc.

In back the sound pressure has to go clear around to the back of the box to "couple up" and ... at higher mid range, sound just does not travel that way = very little or no coupling.

IMO, place the port so it's pointing way from the listener, either on the back or the outside of the enclosure. There is more than just bass coming from the port, especially when the woofer covers midrange frequencies.
