Hi Tannoyists
Is there sufficient demand for an additional loudspeaker sub-category dedicated to Tannoy speakers? It could be for all Tannoys or just the Dual Concentrics or for the vintage DC units. Let's hear what you have to say. Based on initial response, we may want to start a poll.

Yes yes yes yes yes....um .... Yes. This has always been a problem for me. Unless you join a Tannoy group there seems to be very little discussion out there. Also, it is slightly confusing wether or not to look in the full range or alternative sections here. I know that technically these are kind of normal loudspeakers but also kind of ...erm.... not. Maybe as a non manufacturer specific heading it could be just all Dual concentrics? It's all relevant. I think we should steer away from focusing specifically on the vintage stuff. Not least because of the elitism caused by the high prices. Have you seen the prices? (We all have to start somewhere (Tannoy 611.)) I really love Diyaudio and this for me and many others I'm sure would be the icing on the cake. Mmmmmm .....cake... with a dual concentric cherry.

I was certainly expecting some kind of response. Could it be that the co-axial speaker lovers are not common here because of the lack of a dedicated category or because anyone that might be interested is looking mainly in the alternative or full range sections? Any opinions at all would be welcomed.

I tried this for a horn section and that didn't happen. I'd have thought there are less people into tannoys than horns, so the chances are even slimmer.

There is a Yahoo groups Tannoy.
Tannoy DC almost invariably means vintage with a few exceptions. Such as the DMT series and the Royals. All others are, sadly, far less 'performing' drivers .. the l;arger ones are significantly Down on performance and Up on price, the smaller ones are simply inadequate, their Label is the best thing about them. There are much better sounding buys. Besides, beyond a few minor crossover tweeks and replacing the poorly made Tannoy cabinets (this tradition seemingly continues unabated) V poor quality wood with lovely veneers.. a strange and seriously overpriced combination.. There is V little DIY needed or desired.. as in no reason to 'dick' with 'em. Short answer one buys a Tannoy dc does some setup to one's satisfaction then never has to do anything again ever.. Few if any ever feel the need to ltry to improve on the sound.. be that DIY or buying.. Reason for the pricing? Purely Demand ..these are Keepers. |

personally I find the loudspeaker forum too broad. I would love to see a Dual Concentric forum. There are also those of us removing dust caps and building our own... That best buy special looks to be pretty popular as well, so you may see more Dual Concentric fans popping up.
An Open baffle forum would be nice too |

We don't like to subdivide categories too far as that then leads to insular discussions, and people not knowing where to post.
To take Rob's request for a Horn forum as an example, where for instance would you post a thread about, say, a speaker with a ribbon driver at the top, a horn loaded Fostex covering most of the range, but supported by a bass reflex sub at the bottom end? We like active threads, with lots of cross pollination, and you don't get that with very specific categories.
