I was given a rather cheap looking Altec Lansing system by a friend awhile ago. Consists of two mid-high speakers (tweeters?) and a subwoofer.
It had distortion in the higher frequecies (violin range) and finally no sound at all. I opened it up and found that the magnet had become detached. I put the magnet back on, but there is still a large amount of distortion. Trying to listen to an operatic soprano is slightly better than listening to a thunderstorm with piano. I don't have a schematic of the system, but the little circuit board and connections to the speaker look fine. I've moved this system around alot, and the jarring probably didn't do it any good. The other mid-high range speaker works ok. Where should I start looking for the problem? Will I probably need parts? I have little understanding of audio circuits but am pretty good with a soldering iron.

Never mind. Replaced the tweeter with another speaker. I'm not sure that the impedance is matched, but the new speaker is larger and from a similarly cheap system, so probably not all that efficient. Don't have a multimeter around to check.

Secondly, if the magnet is off there is a real good chance the speaker assy has been dropped and therefore all drivers are slightly damaged. Borrow an impedance meter and check each driver and you will find out very quickly if there is a voice coil that is damaged/dragging. |
