Default Is the Peerless SLS263 (10") clean up to ~400Hz?

SLS263 datasheet (.pdf)

The response of the SLS 10" woofer looks fine to me and has a nice falling response that could be used for BSC. Closed box with QTC=0.707 gives a F3 of slightly under 40Hz - that's pretty lovely.

But how does this thing play up to 400Hz or so, where I'd like to cross it to a 4.5" or a 5" midrange? Search gives a lot of answers for dipole bass applications and some XLS vs. SLS discussions, but not a lot of 40-400Hz applications. Maybe there's a reason..

EDIT: Hey, the 10" CSX woofer is looking pretty good too, not as low but the cone is probably better..

Hi,

It appears to be clean to 900Hz, with a minor resonance at this point.
Main break up is at ~ 2.5 kHz. Seems a fine 3 way bass unit.

Thanks! I think you're always the first one to answer my dumb questions.

The CSX10 is starting to look really good to me. There's a similar 3-way design at Murphyblaster - the MBOW1 3-way where it's crossed at 350Hz LR2.

I think this driver will be a start for my experiment. The midrange I'm coupling this with is probably the Seas MCA12RC or MCA15RC(y?)..

Hi

Keep us posted on your progress. Especially interested because you will use scandinavian drivers that are easily accessible to me as we are fellow countryman. This forum has realy great big speaker projects but unfortunately many of them use Dayton or other popular american drivers that are not so easily available in Finland. It realy is a pitty!

So i'm waiting to hear more from you and good luck!

Hi,

Info for mid and tweeter, you can substitute bass units to an extent.

Thanks, I've indeed been checking out the Poor Man's Stradi project - that and the Classic 3-way got me into those Seas midranges.

Since browsing is fun, I did more research and I think I found something really cool:

Visaton TIW200XS

Like the Peerless, this one has a nice Xmax too, actually even better. The response should be OK up to 300Hz, not much over that. My midrange (the 1st choice) is looking more and more like MCA15RCY.

This baby also has a low moving mass, should be pretty fast and match the midrange driver well. And it's 84dB in efficiency, which will be perfect when I'm using two, the MCA15RCY is 90dB. The tweeter.. Not sure. Maybe some basic SEAS model as a start, 27TFFC maybe since Troels mated one successfully with a MCA15RCY.

I didn't tell what I'm after here:

An active 3-way design with good (kicking!) transient response, high headroom, -3dB at 35Hz in sealed cabinets with LT. Definately a dedicated midrange driver (not a 6,5" midbass), going from 300-3000 or so. They should be neutral in sound but not necessarly cold & sterile. I do need to hear what records sounds like, good or bad.

These things will be built for mastering use so I have no WAF to worry about. Floorstanders are cool, but I really have nothing against wider baffle designs either - for example the Quested VS3208 sounds pretty good.

This will be a long project and I'll for sure be reporting back. This is a kickass forum.
