I thought I'd have a go at trying out a way of making curved speakers.
I wanted to try skinning a frame with something and layering up the inside with fibreglass. I haven't got any pics of the construction as I didn't plan on necessarily finishing them, just on testing the principle. I'd gone through the proper (probably I made the base, top and back sections from MDF and skinned them with 3mm hardboard - this actually gave quite a pleasing shape, partly because I'd sloped the baffle back 10 degrees so the shape wasn't a plain cylinder. I lined the inside with 2 layers of fibreglass and poured in a few hundred ml of extra resin. Next came a layer of 2 mm cork sheet and another layer of fibreglass. I glued the front baffle on at this point and shaped it so the edges flowed nicely into the lines of the sides. I thought the box wasn't really substantial enough so I mixed sand and fibreglass resin and coated the inside with a layer about 1cm thick and followed that with another layer of fibreglass. The box was now quite heavy and pretty solid. Last came a layer of liquid latex as the final inside coating. Following lots and lots of sanding and shaping I finished the boxes in satin black. This is actually a really easy way to get a curved cabinet, I thought it would be a load of grief but it's actually quite straightforward I’m going to do a couple of boxes to take a pair of Peerless XLS 10s in the same way so will do construction process pics. This is what they look like \/ They sound nice too |

Other side.
Further proof that photographing black things isn't easy. |

Thank you
I'll get a couple of pics of them outside so the shape is easier to see if I can find the charger for the camera... |

Hi QS,
I'm currently collecting pics of curved speakers to make a third page to the curved stuff on my web site. Is it ok if I add yours?? Also if you have a construction web page I can link to, would be good !! |
