Hi, I am brand new in this whole home audio thing. However I do know a little something about audio. I'm planning on making some cabinets this summer using some Seas Excel drivers W22EX, W12CY and I have a pair of Aurum Cantus G2 Si ribbon tweeters laying around. I have the car versions of the Excels in my car and I love the way they sound. I come to understand that these are exceptional drivers used by many many companies. Anyhow I can be pretty crafty with wood, and have patience, though I do have limited tools, only a circular saw, router, and a palm sander I know that it will be a little tough however I'm up for the challenge. Anyhow I'm brand new to finishes and the names of it. I couldn't tell you the difference between shallac, enamel, or lacquer. However this is kind of how I would like to finish my cabinets
http://www.proworth.com/index.asp?Pa...D&ProdID=4867. Its a watch winder finished in burlwood I have one of these winders, but not sure what the clearcoats are. Anyway from a retarded newbie's point of view how do I go about something like that? Do I get a veneer of my choice sand it down and then spray something on it? Then sand ? wetsand? Sorry for my angst, just not sure where to start. Thanks in advance. Chu |

Hi,
IMO the thinner veneers have a limited capacity to get a real sense of depth of grain. Also sanding wood can have some problems due to tearing and feathering of wood fibers. The best is to use what they had before 3M, ie a sharp scraper. But with burls may have to resort to sanding anyway because of knotts and the non uniform grain patterns will hinder the scraping process. Here is a thread on finishing that might interest you. Something to think about. A lost method of finishing

Chu,
The watch winder is probably sprayed with an acrylic lacquer or CAB lacquer. They are the most common finishes for such articles (commercialy produced small wood items). Either is a good choice for speaker cabinets, if you have spray equipment. There are a few threads on the forum that talk about various finishes, their application and characteristics. A search for: shellac and/or lacquer and/or varnish will get you started. ..tg |
