Can I modify speakers to suit receiver

I'm a newbie at this so please forgive what maybe a stupid question.

My receiver has gone in for repair twice (under warranty) and the repairman has said that the problem is caused by overheating due to running 6 ohm speakers instead of 8 to 16 ohm.

He says that I have to buy new speakers. Is there anyway to modify the speakers to get them up to 8 ohms so they match the receiver?

Hopefully this has not been answered before. I did a search but could find nothing.

You can solve the problem by simply put a 2-4 ohm power resistor (10-25watt) in series on each speaker. The frecvency response will be slightly modified, not bad at all (just a little more bass).
