Default small t line speakers

I want to build some small ( 1 foot tall but 6 inch deep by 4 inch wide approx. ) t line portable speakers.

I'd use oak ply for construction ( cuz I have a bunch left over from a project)

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=297-426

would be neat to see how much bass can be achieved with something like that... any ideas? I also have some nice yellow kevlar 120 watt 4 inch woofers and 60 watt 3 inch woofers I got out of some trashed RCA sats from a home theatre.

hi
PMC here in the UK make some bookshelf sized transmission lines, google for the "PMC DB1" or "PMC Transmission line".

First thing that came up: http://www.acdc.com.tw/speaker/pmc/t...ssion_line.htm
in japanese bu8t the pictures tell the story.

Ive heard those speakers and theyre pretty good, not massive amounts of bass but pretty clean down to around 65hz id say, much more musical than a bass reflex speaker of the same size.

Zaph tested that driver and its a total piece of garbage. the frequency response its awful.

If you are looking for a great mini driver then the hi=vi b3s or b3n are awesome choices.

I had some good results from a set of "bookshelf" tl's i built about two months ago. I used a set of vintage alnico's, nothing fancy, but they have a nice tone, and very limited excursion.

The design does not follow most of the standard tl guidelines: The line area is about a third of the cone area. It is straight, non-tapered with 6 bends, tuned to 70hz. Made from 1/4" MDF, exterior walls are 1/2", baffle is 1" pine. They are small and discreet though, only 19cm * 28.5cm * 22.5cm.

Initially I was very disappointed. The frequency response was bad, with a great boominess in the upper bass, probably around 140hz. After lots of listening and different placements for stuffing they did smooth out. The stuffing is actually very minimal: Relatively dense in the first 1/4 of the line and light stuffing at the very end.

There isn't much bass, but it is present and well behaved. Overall they are very emotional and pleasant to listen to, not hi-fi, but their tone is good enough to make me dislike the b&w 602's that I was using to A/B. I think I'd like to try the same with a slightly smaller driver with more cone travel, as these were 6" drivers.

But anyways, it can be done, if you have t/s specs for your drivers or can do some analysis and modeling.

Hi,

Take a look at Zaph's page with some evaluations of small full range drivers. It was very helpful to me.

http://www.zaphaudio.com/minitest/

Also check out the Madisound Specials page. They usually have a variety of interesting stuff on sale.

You definately want to look at Dave's (Planet10) T-Line Speaker site.

Good luck & happy hunting,

Ralph
