I know that tweeters are recommended to be crossed over at least one octave above their Fs, but, say, if i used an LR 4th order highpass, how close to the Fs could i use the tweeter from?

It all depends on the particular tweeter and how loud you want it to play. See zaphaudio for some tweeter distortion testing results. You'll see that as you reach a certain frequency distortion starts to rise, sometimes dramatically.

I agree that every tweeter is different. I have heard it suggested that 1 octave is a minimum for a 3rd or 4th order filter, and two octaves is better in general. You'll get caught up in the phase change at resonance if you sail too close, as well as the distortion. Your power needs might also be a factor. Might I suggest you equalise your tweeters impedance at resonance.
