Default Cloning a Proac(need advice and source for parts in Australia)

Hi,

I am very intrested in cloning either the response 1c or 2.5. I fell in love with the tablette many years back while I was still in school but I couldn't justify the price. However now armed with a decent budget I am hoping this would be better than the tablette and the reason I am doing this is due to the abundance of information available. and the fact that might as well hit the higher end while I am at it.

My first choice being a beginner would be the bookshelf 1c. My tools arrived(iron ect) and I am good to go with just slight problem.

I don't have experienced and tools for woodwork and I can't find the seas drivers anywhere in Australia.

1. Top of the list and most important before I could get started: Is there a cabinet builder I can go to around Brisbane area? It would be great to have the cabinets ready for installation

2. Can someone please advice on where to source the tweeter and driver? prefably an online shop which sells both the seas and scanspeak for shipping ease. I have no problem locating the scan speaks, just the seas I am having trouble with.

3. Am I getting ahead of myself by trying to build this on my own?

4. This is a long shot but... anyone tried driving these with a T-amp? I also have an arcam delta 290 but I am currently more intrestted in what the t-amp could do and I doubt arcams would drive the proacs into its full potential.

many thanks in advance.

Hi Zester,

I think that the difference betwen making a bookshelf or floorstander is probably not that much different, its still 6 sides, just 4 of them are longer and maybe an extra brace.

http://www.wescomponents.com are in australia, website has no prices I think.

http://www.leda.com.sg/scan-speak.htm these guys are in singapore, never tried them but prices look ok and freight from there should be too much.

good luck and let us know how you get on

Why don't you import directly from Madisound www.madisound.com ?
You'll find that the total cost including freight is very competitive with what's available locally.

Thanks for the replies and help. I am very excited! and will continuosly update my progress.

I was under the impression that http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/1SClone.htm
Requires a sea mid woofer. I can't seem to find it anywhere in Australia and even madisound seems out of stock.

Maybe I should forget about the response 1 and just go for the 2.5

Right now I am just bookmarking every important sites and threads. I can't actually start till I can be sure I could get the cabinet build. I can only I hope I am being realistic by allocating a budget of +- 300 AUD for the cabinets.

this place have rather competetive price http://www.digitalmegahouse.com.au/speakers.html . Just that the website seems rather incomplete.

Also, forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by extra "brace"?

The brace would be more internal supports for the speaker cabinet.

Some people put them in the 2.5 clone, I chose not to, and went with the 1 inch mdf, and 3/4 on the baffle and back.
There is a ton of info on this forum and Madisound, and elsewhere on them.
Good luck on that $300 number. If you are planning to do all this work, you might as well make them nice. I put cherry veneer on mine, and it looks and sounds sweet!

I am so impressed with the bass out of this speaker, I would strongly suggest you go this route, rather than the smaller speakers. It is that good.

Hi Zester

Depending on where you are, you could also try Audiophile in Fitzroy Melbourne.

http://www.audiophile.com.au/contact.html

I think they have the SS 8535 in stock.

I also agree with Lyndon. I built the Proac 2.5 clone with the original crossover and am very happy with the result.

Gosh, for a bunch of Aussies, you aren't making it very easy for him!

Here's the deal-

WES Components (Sydney) are the official Australian distributors of Tymphany (ScanSpeak, Peerless and Peerless V-line (previously Vifa). They deal in wholesale, OEM and busines-to-business sales.
www.wescomponents.com

Their have a retail division is called Wagner Electronics. Unless you have an ABN, this is where you need to go.
www.wagner.net.au

WES/Wagner now also have caps, inductors and resistors, plus all kinds of speaker building parts (ports, binding posts)etc

BUT we also have a friendly fellow Aussie DIYer who resells DST products at competitive prices, and he actually lists prices online. The best retail Aussies prices I've seen.

www.rzaudio.com

For the Response 1s/c, you'll need a SEAS midwoofer. Aranmar Acoustics (formerly Acoustic Concepts) in Victoria, is the official Australian distributor of SEAS.

http://www.aranmaracoustics.com.au/

Start local, then if you can't find anything, we can point to overseas sources. I prefer www.madisound.com
