Hey guys, first post here ! yay for me !
I have a question, or I should say, im looking for some advice or sudgestions. I want to take the plunge into the DIY world of speaker building. Id like to start with a kit, or a full ranger, something simple that will test my cabinet making skills Id like a small speaker, that really excells at acoustic music and jazz, like dave matthews band for example. I was thinking of doing either the KIT41 from CSS or a ported FR125s from CSS. Any sudgestions ? Would one be better then the other ? Id really like to know if the FR is worth the extra 40-50$ after all is said and done. The kit41 would cost me 174.99 in parts shipped, While the fr125s would cost closer to 240 (drivers, port tubes, binding posts etc) Any other kit or fullranger that might be better ? Thanks guys and gals ! |

Roman's Microbe would be a good one;
http://www.rjbaudio.com/projects.html Zaph has some small and very good ones; http://www.zaphaudio.com/ Jon Marsh's designs are most excellent also; http://www.htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php4?f=6 |

Dave's Onkens are an easy build: http://www.planet10-hifi.com/ .Zaphs are recommended, as above. I built a pair of aperiodic boxes using the FR125's. Amazing little driver but it didn't quite excel for a mains speaker, IMO. I use them for surrounds where they do a great job. There are less expensive drivers that are capable of the same reproduction. That Microbe that was linked above looks like a good alignment. Maybe go a little bit upscale and use the Dayton Reference 7" and the Northcreek D25's?
