I used to have Cat5 for my three way speakers. Speaker is bi-wire with separate run for woofer and mid+tweeter.
The sound is rather laid back and a bit soft. Last night I decided to make a couple of 8feet wire from those Goertz 14 AWG foil inductors I purchase from Madisound. I used three layers of clear Scotch tapes between the pair of foil and one layer on the out layer for insulation. The foil cable replace the Cat5 for the mid+tweeter. The bass cable still using Cat. The sound of the foil is slightly more forward with better image localization. Sibilance of the foil calbe is slighly softer though where as the Cat5 has a more edgy and less resolution on sibilance. But I think the foil cable has more details on vocal that allows the performer to better complete their phrasing. The sound of the foil feels a bit warmer but at the same time more forward with more details. The forwardness probably comes from more details I think. Overall, the foils offer a more heterogenous sound as opposed to a more homogeneous sound from the Cat5. I'll try to make another pair for the bass wire and see what will happen. |
