Hi I just finished a pair of MTMs I'd been working (Ok slow going been a year and half.)on them. These were designed and put together on a 100US budget.I thought this might interest some.
The mid\woofers are these : Vifa TC11MG-07 Specifications: *Power handling: 50 watts RMS/100 watts max *VCdia: 1" *L1: .40 mH *Znom: 6 ohms *Re: 4.25 ohms *Frequency range: 110-6,000 Hz *Fs: 110 Hz *SPL: 88dB 2.83V/1m *Vas: .07 cu. ft. *Qms: 1.63 *Qes: .60 *Qts: .44 *Xmax: 1.5 mm *Dimensions: Overall Diameter: 5", Cutout Diameter: 4", Mounting Depth: 2-3/4". Tweeters are DAYTON ND20FA-6 3/4" NEODYMIUM DOME TWEETER PN 275-030 Specifications: *Power handling: 15 watts RMS/30 watts max *VCdia: 3/4" *Impedance: 6 ohms *Re: 5.2 ohms *Frequency range: 3,500 - 25,000 Hz *Fs: 1,800 Hz *SPL: 92 dB 2.83V/1m *Dimensions: A: 1-3/4", B: 1-5/16", C: 3/4". I bought 6 of the Vifa on closeout(I'm pretty sure they aren't available anymore this was last year)for $6 per.The tweeters at the time were $3 All cacacitors and inductors I obtained from litekeys(ebay id) on ebay ..cheap. I'll post the details later tonight have to go out for few. |

Here's Crossover I used just a simple 3rd order Butterworth. Now you may ask about the cabinets. Those I did not build but modified the internal volume with rubber(They were cheapie Vidsonix MTM)
Costs for this project 4x $6 Vifa Mid/woofer 2x $3 Dayton tweeters + shipping $10 $40 total Crossover componets were all purchased as one lot from ebay. cost $10 Vidsonix MTM cost 50 shipped ebay for a grand total of $100 US I originally bought the vidsonix on a lark off ebay and found that they shrieked a bit much after testing the woofer there was just too big bump in the midrange to deal with hence the vifas. The Vifas are much smoother through the midrange and the cross at 4.5k works well I think. For the amount of money spent on this project these speakers turned out quite well.I did some listening with Priests Unleashed in The East(A very underated Live recording) and also some Bizet.I found them to have a nice tone, imaging was sweet except maybe if I stood to the side and the midbass for the size of these speakers is excellent. To pick though the Daytons while delivering decent highs could use a little polish(a little weak as well.,).(I maybe tempted to change them to some VIfa tc27-35 I have on the shelf). But they sound immensely better than the Vidsonix(Not really a challenge tho I think the RS MX-1000 I found on the curb the other night may sound better lol.)and many commercial speakers I've had for under 800US. |

I didn't really care for the way that 3rd order sounded, the midrange sounded fuzzy and very similar to the 2nd order used in the Vidsonix.Too much really it kind of creeped me out.And were talking different tweeters and mids here from one xover to the other. So to satisfy my conundrum I put the VIdsonix xover in and boom same fuzzy mids Now this was getting weird indeed.I at this point I prayed to the Audio Gods for a solution. But the only thing that came to me was a bit of indigestion.
Well since I don't have a mic handy I decided I'd just have to try again by ear as it were.At this point I thought KISS the methodology(lol) would be the best way.I put a 10w resitor and 2.8uf mylar cap on the tweets and a .36mh inductor on the mids. After listening to a few cds all I can say is Ahh.The fuzziness is gone and the highs are as nice as these Dayton econo tweets could ever hope to be. I guess the best laid plans of Crossovers hmm.Well I can say now I think my $100 MTMs are finally a success. And they seem to blend well with my dipole subs(A story for another day.)when I set them to the highpass on my Denon. |

Ok just wanted to point out I can not recommend the ND20FA-6 3/4" tweeters. After 4 crossovers and a notch i'm done.Check my post on these for more info here:
Nd20fa-6 3/4" I am now in the process of designing a new crossover using a pair of VIFA D27TG-35 1" SILK DOME TWEETER I had laying around.I just did not want to mislead anyone on the ND20FA-6s they are not good in my opinion. If anyone has test equipment and is willing to post results I'm willing to send them a pair for free. |
