What sort of music do you listen to?
what sort of budget do you have? what size constraints do you have? would you prefer floor standing or bookshelf? |

How good are you at woodworking.
How experienced are you with speakers. How big is your room. How tolerant is your wife. |

I've just been thinking about a 2-way. A Fostex FE108eSigma XOed to a pair of vintage 12" Foster (you could substitute any number of bass drivers). XO somewhere around 200 Hz....

The fact you want bookshelf speakers is in my opinion the limiting factor here. You have a good sized room, you have a good budget, etc. etc. (sorry but my imagination was conjuring monstrosities).
So, maybe a place to start is to decide the size of your woofer (as good as any I guess). Most 10" drivers don't reach far enough to meet most tweeters so you will usually want between 8" and 4". The benefit of the 8" is further reaching bass, and under some circumstances, less sensitivity will be lost in carrying out baffle step compensation. They will also move more air. You may therefore get more volume and more bass and at a lower volume control setting. The smaller drivers are light. They sound correspondingly quick. Usually a bookshelf will give you bass boost enough to compensate for their smaller size. You will need to mate them with a light tweeter. If you are to put them on stands away from the walls, the small drivers will be best if you plan to listen from a short distance. |

One option, if you want to stay with bookshelf, is the Jim Griffin JX92s/G2si. You can find a link on this forum with a search.

I would recommend this:
http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/3WClassic.htm I am not sure why you would prefer a two way since your wood working skills as you indicated are quite good. This is a three way project that seem quite easy to build and Troel is a very trustworthy guy. The total cost will be well below 1000 euro. |
