hey all, i'm starting a home audio system at home and I decided the first things I want to build is a couple of tower speakers next to the tv. I'm going to be building a psuedo-receiver using my computer's soundcard thru some amps into the speakers in the future but for right now i'm going to be using the speaker wire outputs my tv has. I don't know hardly anything yet about putting together my own speakers, but I am unfortunately not a member that has alot of money to spend. :) That said, I am still looking at what drivers to use, and what not but really I'd just like some help on the basic terminology of this stuff.

How can I tell what sort of wattage my tv outputs, is my first question. Do I need a multimeter(i have one)? Secondly, how does one match up speakers to the output of the tv/receiver/amp, ie. RMS wattage. As you can see these are pretty simple newb questions, even if you just point me to a website that would be great.

Heres a nice driver I'd like to mess with.

Only $11.70 each, so it wont break the bank

Mate up to say this tweeter...$15.12 each

Crossover at about 2K Hz, and it should be fine and only about $50 for all your drivers.

I recommend this book, Great Sound Stereo Speaker Manual by David Weems. ALthough you can learn almost everything you need to know by surfing the web. It just helps to have stuff handy.

Although most poeple will swear by the Loudspeakers Design Cookbook. I will say that I have both (actually the earlier edition of the book above) and while the Cookbook is VERY informative, it has alot of technical stuff that is beyond most poeple and would probably make you wish you never even thought about wanting to build speakers. Weem's books give you just what you need and don't scare you with super crazy details.

Good Luck
