Question Warm 4" - 5" midrange

Hello,

Im locking for a good 4" - 5" (Maybe 3" too) midrange unit, for the 300 - 3.5k range. 100% dist. free is not my main goal, but a warm, pleasant and detailed sound is. A little like my koss headphones.

To give you an idea of what I don't want, I can say that I have used the old HDS 164 (coated paper version) in a ML TL and I aggressively disliked it's midrange. (I think partly because of it hi mms (20 g) and partly because it was used in a big box).

It dose not have to be particularly easy to filter, I like plying with triky xovers - it's more important that it fits my taste.

Midrange units I have considered this far is:

Monacor SPH-102KEP (MMS = 3 g!, but ferrofluid, do I want that?)
Old Seas MCA11FC (H134) (coated paper)
and MP14RCY/p (H522) (polyprop)
Peerless M122-831615 (also, like monacor, ferrofluid?)

But Im open to other suggestions too, price range max - $70 * 2.

Best,

Leif

How about a CSS WR125? Paper cone, extended response, beautiful midrange, and easy to work with. $50 a piece nowadays.

Good luck.

Hi,

IMO:
Generally warm pleasant and detailed is more in the scope of the
crossover network and accurate implementation of baffle step
compensation than the actual mid driver fitted. (Also for metal
drivers effective supression of high frequency high Q modes).

In the good old fashioned sense of polypropylene drivers used
for example in the Spendor range that have the qualities you
describe the obvious choice would be the Vifa P13 midrange.

I always return to Vifa's P13MH, ruler flat, ultra natural sounding, 89.5 dB/W/m, best option to handle critical 300 - 3000 + Hz band. Truly succesful results with LPG 26T crossed at 2800- 3000 Hz in the HF side, and to Focal's 11" polykevlar at 380 Hz. Only impedance correction in all drivers and text-book 2nd order Linkwitz-Riley x-over, made it outstanding big 60Kg. Three way floorstander!!

I second the WR125, very warm and very detailed. Another driver with a surprisingly warm midrange is the Dayton RS225, though it needs to be crossed low and steep. I haven
t heard the rest of the RS woofers , but I assume they have a similar character.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. The WR125 seems to be one very interesting driver, Chris. I vill have serious look at it.

It's probably that one, Seas polyprop or the SPH-102KEP.

If anyone reading this have used the SPH-102KEP please let me know what you think about it.

Best Regards,

Leif

I have thoroughly enjoyed the MP14RCY/p (H522) (polyprop), but my understanding is that it has been discontinued and I can't find any more in the US. So have moved to the WR125 for the future. Heard a pair at our audio get together last weekend and they are very smooth, like the SEAS. Version I heard had no crossover, just running full range.
