Default Fuzzy vocals caused by box?

I am working on a speaker which will use one dayton rs 12" up to 500hz. Right now the driver is installed in a box of three cubic feet made of one layer of .75 inch particle board with minimal bacing. I am hearing some fuzzieness and general inaccuracy especially on female vocals. Do you think this will dissapear when i build a decent box out of 1.25 inch mdf? Or, do you think this is the fault of the driver?

thanks

Well, 500 hz is a bit high for the RS woofer, maybe 300 - 400 max.
What mid & tweeter you using?
I find female vocals are fuzzy due to driver phasing and crossover slopes.

Crossed over actively with a 24db/octave slope to an altec 288c compression driver and 450hz tractrix horn.
Thanks
