Default What type of drivers caps and coils used around here?

Hi I just discovered this place and I am curious what brand of drivers caps and coils do you guys use? Also what suppliers do you guys by from? I have bought most of mine from Parts Express & Madisound and am looking for other options.
Thanks! Aaron H.

Solen Fast Film Capacitors, Solen wirewound resistors and Solen Solid Core Inductors.

I've heard that Sonicap (sp?) makes a very good "sounding" capacitor.

MCM Electronics is another;
http://www.mcminone.com/
The 2 midbass drivers are from MCM buyouts & sale drivers.
The tweeter is a Seas H1212 from Madisound.
The crossover for the left speaker are from Parts Express using the best components and the right speaker is using a crossover from Madisound using sale & bargain bin parts. The caps are Mylar & Electrolytic. Absolutely no audible sound difference between the two.

The box is a Transmission Line tuned to an Aperiodic enclosure. Fully stuffed to help kill & attenuate the back reflected sound from the drivers in essence an Infinite Baffle.

The baskets on the drivers are covered with rope caulk to prevent them from resonating and adding their ringing to the music.Click the image to open in full size.

Mundorf M-Cap (the standard ones and about the same price as Solens), PE perfect layer inductors (good value), Mills MRA-12 resistors.

Hi, Rabbitz,

Where do you get Mundorf M-Cap in OZ? at the same price as Solens? I have been using ICW SA Clarity caps at about the same price as Solens and found the ICW SA caps substantially better. I am curious about the Mundorf M-Cap if it is as cheap as Solens and would like to compare it to ICW since the Mundorf M-Cap has such a large following.

Regards,
Bill

Most people here will use any brand of capacitors as long as it's a polypropylene capacitor.

Most people here will use any brand of inductors as long as it's an air core inductor. Some people will use a iron core for large values or because the DCR is too high in some cases.

I sell Solens and the Mundorf are from
Soundlabs.

Some examples (Solen my retail / Mundorf M-Cap / Jaycar)
3.3uF $6.75 / $8.00 / $5.55
5.6uF $8.60 / $10.00 / $8.45
10uF $12.05 / $13.00 / $13.75

So they're not that much different.

Thanks Rabbitz.

I looked at the Soundlabs site and came to know there are two types of M-Caps, the ordinary M-Caps and the M-Cap Supreme. I guess the later one is what people rave about but they are very expensive.

I previously bought some Jaycar ones. When comparing to the ICW or the Solens they sound awful. I bought numerous things from Jaycar but eventually found they were wastes of money. Nowadays the only things I buy from them are metafilm resistors, screws and nuts.

In Australia I think the best place to buy is WES Components if you can get trader prices (obviously you have their trade prices, I have as well) otherwise on retail prices WES is equally expensive. If I cannot find parts at WES then I get them from Farnell. Farnell is expensive but I don't think I have other choices. WES' products are quite good. Farnell don't sell low quality stuff. Jaycar rarely has anything good except perhaps the Supra cables.

I may get some MOX resistors from Soundlabs one day.

Regards,
Bill

The standard M-Cap are extremely good and I felt there was no need to use the M-Cap Supreme in a speaker crossover as I'd rather spend the money on drivers.

I tried some of the MOX resistors and were a bit better than the standard NI wirewound, but the Mills from Michael Percy were much better.

For most jobs, I find Solen caps, WES inductors and NI wirewound resistors do the job well.

Oh yeah... the Supra cables are really good and use them exclusively now inside the box as well as between the amp and speaker. All my other expensive speaker cables have been given the flick.
