I'm giving these two strong consideration at the moment. However, given that they are kits that I can't readily audition, I have some questions:
How do you like them? Why did you pick this model? Would you buy it again? What did you do for the enclosure? If you live near San Francisco, can I arrange for a brief audition? Thanks and regards, Rob W |

Not exactly. However, I've been chatting with Peter Comeau over the past couple of days (he was head designer at Mission until very recently) who is developing a new range of kit speakers for World Designs, the new kit arm of Hifi World magazine, on this very subject.
He's just developed a new aperiodic standmount with a 10" Seas mid-bass specifically designed to his specs., and the same Millenium tweeter as the Thor / Odin, and his honest opinion is that its much better. He's no reason to lie to me: the Seas kits, which they also sell, cost a good bit more. And that big driver (quite a compact cabinet though) should shift air better too -it's got a cone area half as much again as both the Odin's put together, and should be clearer at low frequencies due to the loading. Just a thought. www.world-designs.co.uk Best Scott |

I have Odins but the old version with Madisound OX. These are very good loudspeakers. At the same time they are kind of difficult load, so you will need a good amp.
As for the 10' drivers I expect them to perform better in the bass region but not so good in the mids. With such a driver I would go for a 3-way speaker design. One of the strongest points of the Odins is the midrange, which is due to the 6.5' drivers. Regards Asen |

I'd normally tend to agree, but the new 10" unit has a lovely smooth roll-off and the tweeter is crossed over pretty low, which tends to negate the problems that usually can occur. Doesn't have that mid-range glare that the metal drivers can occasionally exhibit too, and is a nice, easy load. Different objectives really -you pays your money... (complete well-known phrase).

I have just recently finished building the Odin cabinets. Havent the finish ready yet, but i am now test listening to them .
The finish will be wood on the side walls and deer skin on the the front and back. I have the elements with offset from eachother, mainly a design reason. Since i will also have a 10" Seas excel W26 woofer in a separate cabinet under the Odins. A pic of the Odin without the finish: |

I know no details about the 10" SEAS driver but I expect it to be a 8 Ohms driver. One good thing about the Odin is that paralleling the drivers one will get a 4 Ohms resistance, which means smaller inductor in front of it. The smaller inductor means less distortion and it is easely hearable with these magnesium cone drivers. They are very sensitive to XO parts quality. So there are many pros and cons. One should choose what is best for him/her.
In my speakers I have obtained best results with a Sledgehammer iron-core inductor. It performs much better than the air-core types. I think it is because of the shorter wire. If the resistance was 8 Ohms I should have used an inductor twice bigger than the one I have, which means even more wire. graks, I would never convert a Thor into Odin. Odins are smaller but they need stands so I don't think you can save much space in the end. My plans are when I find the time to make the opposite thing - to make Thors out of my Odins. |

Asen: I am going to use the Seas W26 bassreflex cabinets as stands for the Odins, so i`ll save quite some space. Dont need the extra bass the Thor have, and i think the Odins will integrate better with the subs.

I have this funny feeling you're going to find in the long term that the Odins actually have more bass than the Thor TL has...

I am not sure BR could give more and deeper bass than TL. I still miss the bass of my old TLs (my own design, 3 way, with Vifa drivers) I sold to a friend. The bass drivers were 8" ones. I admit that the Odins can not reproduce organ or low frequency percussions as my old TLs did even with these expensive drivers working in parallel. I hope the TL encosure will help.
