Is it possible to make a box very loosy on purpose? I mean, I know it can be done, but are there any repercussions? Modeling my 5.5” driver in Soundeasy I came up with some good enclosure designs for comparison. I am not trying to stick with any specific alignment although the 35L enclosure is very close to a .5dB Chebyshev. The thing I am looking at most is group delay, specifically in the 40Hz region. Here the only way I could find to keep group delay down without sacrificing a smooth transfer function was to make a very lossy box (Qb = 2). I did some experiments with a test box I had one of these drivers in, and I can indeed make the Qb end up around 2 pretty easily. What am I missing? It seems silly to make a ported box that leaks like a sieve, but if it allows a tuning that drastically reduces group delay could it be useful? Also note, the excursion is more for the lossy box at the tuning frequency, but not much, and when you go under the tuning frequency, the Chebyshev box quickly catches up and has the same maximum excursion under the tuning frequency. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Aperiodic?
AFAIK group delay is endemic to bass reflex enclosures. |
