Default High and low pass on seperate boards... why?

Could someone explain the benefits to me why you would keep the low pass seperate and far away from the high pass on a passive crossover if you are not biwiring?
What are the disadvantages to having one board sharing the same negative ground path to the speakers?
Thanks

If the high and low pass sections use inductors then keeping them far apart and properly oriented (so their magnetic fields cross at a 90 degree angle) will reduce the interaction between the inductors. Ideally you want every component to have it's own separate path to a single ground point. That's often complicated if not impossible to do for some things so we make compromises. Just depends on how much you can or are willing to compromise.

It could also be the result of the enclosure design. Some crossovers just won't fit in the box all on the same board.
