I am doing a 3 way speaker project with the Peerless12 inch 830669 woofer in 2 cubic ft. sealed with Qtc around .9. I am looking for midbass drivers 5.5 inch, and tweeters. I am looking for suggestions on these drivers and crossover points, and slopes, etc and look forward to seeing what you experienced audiophiles may be able to suggest. Not a lot of bucks, but some previous experience. Seas, Vifa, and Peerless, seem to be coming up in my research, however, I would like to hear from you DIYers your experience and recommendations. I will also be building my crossovers and seek recommendations. I hope this becomes a spirited thread, as I seek information from you guys in the trenches, rather than simply from driver spec sheets. Along with the transient bass from the Peerless 12 inch, I seek a clear, detailed, transparent midrange, with a good dispersion tweeter, delivering crisp highs. Overall, I seek an OPEN sound, which will also take good power and solid volumes. I did some Speakerlabs, back in the day and was disappointed in the closed sound they had. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...Respectfully submitted

Tough question. Speakers are like movies, two people can listen to the same one and come out with entirely different opinions on how they sound. Knowing this, I've taken to purchasing different drivers and swapping them around from box to box to see if I can tell any drastic differences.
Varying the music from soft jazz to classical then hard rock, punk rock and any and all inbetween, the speakers do make a difference and more so by the type of music you want to hear. I think if you stick with the popular going drivers, you'll be OK, taming them to type of music you want to hear. Funny part of my little experiment was that some cheap Vifa midrange close outs ($2.98) from partsexpress sounded better with certian music than did the any of the other higher priced midranges. I think it has more to do with what the guy at the mixing board wanted to hear and what we at home expect to hear. |
