Had my speaker monster cable wires running under my carpet and when the carpet installers put in the new rug they damaged and cut the wires. My question is what's the best way to splice the wires and maintain a good signal since replacing the whole wire is not a option? Thanks!

Personally I would solder the cable. Simple but effective. Not as good as the original..but probably the best you can do under the circumstances.

I'm with Bas, solder them.

Just to be different from my fellow mods, I'd go for crimps. Quicker and neater, and no risk of solder on the carpet.

Which type is it? The clear jacket?
Basic, simple solution (first thing that came to my mind): Use solder with high silver content to splice the wires and insulate with heat shrink tubes.

The carpet installers cut them then they should replace them for you no matter how big the job is.
It is there fault for not being carefull enough to ensure they do not damage anything. |

If the speaker wire is like any other Monster wire I've seen, it has a plastic "dielectric" doohicky centered in the middle of the conductors, and an inner plastic sleeve surrounding the conductor bundle. These seem to be there for marketing reasons, but will make soldering a pain if not removed.
While the carpet is up, you could run new wire in between the tack strip and baseboard. |

Carpet runs are a bad idea; in some cases even illegal(fire codes). The furthest I would carry any install is the aforementioned run between the tack strip and baseboard. Maybe this was a sign?

Solder it, crimp it, cold weld it. The electrons won't care. Just make sure it's well insulated. Under-carpet wiring is not a good idea in general though, as noted in the last post. Just replace it. Doesn't have to be expensive. Quad have demonstrated their 989 electrostatics (one of the most transparent speakers ever made) with a power-cord ripped off a Black & Decker hedge-trimmer before now. Did anyone notice? Nope.

Um, unless you have signed a disclaimer stating you absolve the fitters of any responsibility for losses or damage that happens as a direct result of their activities, I'd go after them for replacements...
They will be insured and if their premuims go up it'll teach them to be more careful in future... You shouldn't suffer as a result of their activities even if you can easily effect a satisfactory repair. |
