Default zaph mtm vs d27Veritas?

i know i have been asking alot of "which speaker" questions, but this will be the if not one of the last posts, as im buying parts after exams (last exam tomorrow).

i listen to lots of genres
metal
jazz
60s and 70s rock stuffs

bottom line a really broad spectrum. these speakers will be used at a couple basement parties, not for dancing or nothin like that. Just some loud music in the background(not so loud you cant talk over it). i Do expect these speakers to do a couple things

reach realistic levels, i want to hear as close to possable as what the mixing engineer wanted me to hear. they need to be able to play low enough for 90 of music without a sub, i prefer the sound of speakers that go low than speakers handing the low stuff off to a sub (for music). thats pretty much it actually.

both these speakers hang around the same price. Im still in highschool, so i have acess to table saws routers whatever realtively easily (all of which i have at home as well)

i really like the idea of a nice shallow rolloff sealed box, and letting room gain do the rest. In my room gain starts at 55-60hz(its not big) so both sealed designs will ave a bit of a hump in the punchy range, and get easily low enough.

if you need any more info than that just ask, apartfrom that all you gotta say is which speaker would be better for me. not for partys they will be in BIGGER rooms!

heres the links if you need em

also tell me WHY they're better, smoother bass, better imaging etc.

Well, I have experience with one of those.

Describing your tastes, I think you'd be better suited with the Veritas. Metal and 70's rock needs low end slam, and 2 sealed 10's are going to do that better than the pair of Vifa XG18's.

If you really want to build a Zaph Audio design, the Waveguide TMM would be better suited than the XG18. While the midrange of the XG18 MTM design is crystal clear, it might still need a sub for some tastes.

wow i didnt expect a response from the designer!
first off, you seem to really know your stuff, all your crossover diesigns baffle me, but you always provide alot of reasons to back up your deisgn, and the fr plot is ALWAYS impressive.

second isnt the waveguide tmm a bit expensive? the mtms are stretching my budget already. Do you think that the mtms would have a serious advantage over the veritas in terms of fidelity? or would you say the veritas is also a well deisged speaker?

I've used the D27 and it's a decent tweeter, but it's not better than the Seas.

The waveguide TMM is roughly the same cost as the XG18 MTM.

I don't have any experience with that dome midrange, so I can only guess at it's performance.

I still recommend the Veritas over either of my designs because of your preference of metal and rock music and your lack of a sub.

lack of a sub? i guess that makes my 15" atlas in a 6.5 cu ft box tuned to 20hz nonexistant then?

nah im just joking, but i really prefer the sound of fullrange(you knwo what i mean) speakers for music. plus when i tkae my system to parties, i dont wanna carry around a sub on top of two really heavy speakers and some amps.

would upgrading the tweeter later on(and of course redesigning the crossover) be a good idea? like would it be feasable?

I'm also interest in building a set of speakers that would sound great playing Clasic Rock and it sound like the Veritas might be the ticket. What other DIY designs would fit this bill well that would be comparable to the Veritas or a step up?

its like im replying to my own question....

as zaph said his waveguide TMM would fit the bill, or a look by a deisgn called teh "Eros" by the maker of the original ribbon based veritas. Though they cost about 500$ the maker is enthusiastic to no end about them, and has made many other successfull designs.

look at the parts express speaker designs, they have ltos of good ones, if you want extreme low end from a pair of towers you can look at "Matts Traps" which also got good reciews and shoudl definately have the kind of punch that rock needs.

if it makes any difference to zaph, ive decided to go with the veritas. But later on (when i have some cash) i would like to change to tweeter to something a bit higher end, eg vifas dual concentric tweet.
