Default Driver price?

Hello,

A friend of mine has some Dynaudio drivers and he is looking to sell them.
However, he forgot the price that he paid for them.

these are unused and have been in store for quite a few years.

The drivers in question are Dynaudio 24W100 10inch ones.

Does anyone know what each driver originally cost?

The other question is ..how long can you store drivers without using them? Will there be any problems with the drivers?

He has them stored just like the way they are mounted on a baffle.

Thanks,

Sachi

I can't believe I actually bought a pair of 24W100's once. (long before I learned that price does not equal performance)

On the other hand, I can't believe I actually got more than what I paid for them on ebay.

Here's a 1997 price list. (USD only, sorry)

ps. they are probably ok if they were stored upright and in a dry area.

Thanks a million Zaph!

I may just pick up a pair of those drivers>
What was the price you paid on ebay?

I should be able to get the drivers at about 40% of the price(around 80$ a piece) ..is that ok or are there better drivers that can be had for the same price..?

What about the 17W75.. Are they good drivers?..has anyone used them in a design?

I have used these in Theil CS3.5 lookalike box with the D52af and D21af in 1989-90. They need about 40-50 liters to breathe but can handle prodigious ammounts of power.

at $80 each they are very good just make sure the surrounds are in good shape. The 24W is a 9" woofer and could be compared to 8" woofers like the 22W series from Vifa/Scan Speak.

The 17W75 is ok upto 2k and ie designed to be paired with the D28af as the D28af can be XOed low enough.

Just to be clear, my point was that the Dynaudios are not worth the money. I sold mine on ebay because they were just not that great and easily outperformed by drivers of 1/4 the cost.

I sold a pristine pair of 24W100's on ebay for almost $500. That was 10 times more than what I thought they were worth. It made me feel like a criminal, but the guy who bought them probably though he got a good deal. Ditto for a bunch of other Dynaudio speakers I got rid of. It seems like people will never learn that high price does not equal high performance.

If you need a good pair of 8" woofers, look to Seas or Peerless.

Dynaudio. The most over-rated drivers on Earth. Good news for you of course as it means their re-sale value is pretty high. Seas 90% of the time for me, but don't forget / neglect Scan Speak, Volt, Vifa or even some of the Fostex range of woofers.

Best
Scott

Duly noted Zaph.

Its not that i go by driver price.
In fact, for my first DIY speaker (in the finishing stages) i have used the Dayton 10 inch classics(a mere 20$ a piece)..I think that they are simply fabulous for the price.

But, i was just curious as to why these drivers are so highly priced?

1) Production costs too high - They are not made in China, they are likely made by local old men who have been building speakers for 20 years. In other words, their workers are paid too much.

2) Quantity sold too low - Overhead costs have to be recouped. The only way to do that is to jack up the prices to make up for it.

3) For marketing purposes - Pricing these higher imparts the false image that they are better... and it works.

These are three generic reasons that are not limited to Dynaudio. Just about all very high priced speakers fall under these three reasons.
