Default My secret weapon! 6.5" midrange

Max Speakers offers a model, PR65neo. It's distributed by a number of companies (google the PN) now, and is an excellent driver. Near drop-in replacement for Audax PR17OMO. I had one driver with a rubbing voice coil, but was easily able to realign it (fortunately I found this out before installing in a box). I have been using it in a sealed alignment, to get a predictable 12dB/octave rolloff at 200Hz (14Lish box). The peak at 4kish is easily controlled witha second order (I use a first order and tolerate a small peak), and can be used to extend response out pretty high- the beaming means that a horn tweeter will not have a big dispersion differential from the mid, so you can avoid HF wall reflections to some extent, and have similar dispersion characteristics on mid and tweeter. I've built it into half a dozen boxes, with several tweeters. Currently am running with Fostex FT17H, but have tried with an Apexjr. soft dome (96dB) which I rather like, a ceramic/aluminum dome from the same manufacturer (I like it, but it's 4 ohms dagnabbit!). Current results are initial at best, but I'm rather enjoing the current alignment.

Who cares what it looks like, that's what grills are for.

Nice driver BTW, would be great in high eff. design.

They are available in the UK from http://www.pa-direct.co.uk/drivers.htm

Thumbs down If looks could killl....

Most audiophiles would be in jail!

Seriously though, that is a mighty bad picture! It doesn't look like that in real life. While not a prizewinner, it's not all grainy and dirty looking as the picture portrays. The surround is a coated cloth, not as sleek or gorgeous as a rubber surround, but extremely low mms and loss. The real cosmetic issue is the foam gasket around the mounting, for use in behind-baffle mountings, but that's one you have to accept.

In any case, I highly recommend the driver for its SOUND. One must sometimes think 'outside the box' or try things you're concerned with to find a good solution- in this instance, I was reluctant to try the driver, due to it's dubious origins and nasty response peak just above 4k.... but it's a great piece.

Hi Badman,

I`m interested in the pr65neo. I was wondering if you had done measurements with the driver ... the published FR curves seem to be very good, except obviously for the peak. A first or second order filter at the point there the response starts to rise could extend the use up to 5-7kHz. BTW, have you measured the dispersion at your crossover point? I`m thinkinh of a horn tweeter or a ribbon in a waveguide.

The only retailer I`ve found (other than the one in the uk) is Solen. Where did you source yours from?

If you say its better than the Audax it should be a very nice driver! Could you please comment on the measurments and on a comparison against the audax, plus the seal cabinet volume you are actually using?

Thanks in advance,

Seb.

Hi swak:
I got mine from a non-retail source (www.maxspeakers.com). Sorry, I haven't measured, except with my favorite pair of horribly non-linear head-mounted microphones, which is the way I measure most things. I run it sealed in a cab of about 12-14L, which gives response down to about 200Hz. There it crosses over to peerless HDS 8"s (2 per side) in sealed boxes, and a little box of boom over in the corner (600W of boom, to be precise). The current results are rather good. Unspectacular in the best possible way (music's just there, no thinking about sound).

I *REALLY* like the FT17H tweeter, too, btw.

Default Thanks

One more thing, at what freq. are you crossing to the tweeter? Did you do a side by side comparison with the Audax? It would be nice to have a comparison against a well known good driver.

Regards,
Seb

4k, and no, I didn't compare directly to the audax, as their Qts requires different enclosures (The audax is perfect for open baffle, the PR65neo requires some additional Q via an enclosure). So in a way, I'm comparing apples and oranges,

in my testing. But dayam is that PR65neo good)
