Newbie Revive Sound Dynamics 1200 SMT's

Greetings from Fort McMurray, Alberta.
I'm a newbie to this forum and would appreciate some imput from it's knowledgeable members!

I'm digging thru my old audio equipment, purchased in my teens in the late 80's, with a renewed interest of bringing it back to the great sounds I remember.

The amp/preamp is Hafler (DH 101 preamp with a DH 200 amp) and I have found lots of info on this combo with mods available from John Hillig at Musical Concepts.

My question centers around the loudspeakers, they are Sound Dynamics 1200 SMT studio monitors (I believe now part of ENERGY speakers). I recently removed the speakers from storage and have found the foam surrounds on the woofers to be totally rotted out. Rubbers on 12" passive radiators looks OK.

Searches on the net have shown I can have the woofers re-surrounded but I wonder if this is the best approach? I will be making mods to the amp and would like best sound possible.

I have not found any information on these particular speakers, although I have seen that there is a LOT of information on the net with regards to high end speakers. As I am able to invest some cash to revamp, is anyone familular with these units and can suggest some options to upgrade? Cabinets are in great shape, would driver and crossover replacement be more cost effective for improved sound?

Then again if I am wasting my time with these units, I would like to know that as well.
