Hi.
I never thought about diy audio until I heard some great speakers at a terrible price. Found this site a while back and been reading and learning a lot. Figure it's time to ask my first question. My room; 3.70 m by 5.05 m, concrete (16 by 6 ft) 1 side (5m) window with heavy curtain, the other sides have almost nothing on them, dartboard, projector, 2m ht screen. Furniture; computer desk, lcd tv, two lounge chairs, small salon table. Pretty spartan. Some hanging plants and a flag or something might be needed to improve acoustics. Music taste mostly rock/alternative, at times very loud e.g. pumpkins, gathering, kate bush, soulfly, rammstein, tool, floyd, portishead Current system pc (hq mp3 and lossy ape) to a b&o beomaster 9000 with b&o s45 speakers. I'm looking for way better sound, 100% stereo. Room filling, tight fast mid-bases, sharp guitars, clean female voice. Hopefully 1500 euros for speakers and amp will bring me near that. Less would be nice. More if you can convince me I can notice a clear difference. I'm not an audiophile and my ears have suffered massive abuse. Can't hear that much difference between a 320 mp3 and a wave file. Amps sounds pretty much the same to me also. But I recognize good speakers when I hear them. Finally my question. There are many choices in speaker design, open baffle, floor-standing, against the wall, free standing, monitors on stands, with or without sub-woofers, electro-stats, 2/3/4 way etc etc. Given my room, music taste and budget is there a design that jumps out as the way to go or to avoid? Or are all the designs possible? |

i would start off with some floor standers - min width x 48" or more in height and let the depth be what you play with
maybe a ported 3 way with a choice mid 10" for the low - maybe a 6" for the mid - or even an 8 (xover comes into play more i think as well as tweeter choice) i'm no pro at naming brands or giving numbers but thats where i would start best of luck with it |

Hello
If you are looking at clarity good natural voice I would look at ed frias diy also known as audio review diy you can get the plans from audio review.com, go to learn, then to diy speakers, or you can get kits from madisound in the states for about $190 american, these are 2 way large bookshelf and are very easy to build, being bookshef the base is not huge but very tight, read the reviews on audio review see what you think Regards Roger |

NurEinTier-
I can not comment on sound quality or proce, but here are some projects to get you thinking. Projects that use the Dayton 8" Woofer. Very popular, inexpensive and appear to be used and liked for "ROCK" music. http://www.palmbayaudio.com/crazy8.html The Dayton Reference Series drivers are also very popular. Here is an interesting project: http://www.mfk-projects.com/rs_dipole.htm Finally, you current speakers are some serious brand names. Here are some projects with the "brnad names" of DIY speakers. http://home1.stofanet.dk/troels.gravesen/ Good Luck and keep us posted!

PA = public address. These are the speakers you hear when at a concert. Often referred to as pro drivers. Very efficient, and can take a whooping.

Thank you all for your replies.
Just returned listening to some commercial speakers. Loved the wide soundstage from Mirage omni 260 It blew much more expensive floorstanders out of the water. http://miragespeakers.com/omni260.shtml Sadly it misses a real bass. Maybe there's a similar design diy kit somewhere? I'm thinking 3 way, 12" (maybe even 15") woofer, wide spectrum midle speaker, ribbon tweeter. But what the hell do I know being a complete newbie. Don't even know what PA drivers are, lol. |
