Why are there no high impedance loudspeakers?
I am into headphones a lot (college student with a small apartment), and I've always used low impedance headphones, i.e. 32 ohm Grados or 24 ohm Shure or 64ohm AKG, etc. But I just bought some Sennhesier 650's which are 300ohms. They sound excellent, but what I love is that no matter what I plug them into I can't hear hiss or anything from them. If I plug in my 24 ohm in ear monitors which are 102db/mw efficent there is some serious hiss out of a lot of sources. The only thing I could think of is that some really big inductors would be needed, and higher voltage amplifiers, although the VA rating would remain the same. What are your thoughts? |

Maybe the right answer is in different headphones efficiency, not in the different impedance.

I wouldn't think so, both of my headphones my 300ohm Sennheiser and my 32ohm Grado are around the same efficency of 90db/mw, however my Sennheisers can not be played out of an ipod, etc, because they don't produce enough voltage (maybe get 75db), but my Grados can get 105+db out of an ipod.
