Hi!
I'm interested in a ultimate midrange that has lowest distortion and good frequency response extending well into tweeter territory... around the 6k mark. Any help? |

A very subjective question with lots of different answers. The main one being "there is no ultimate midrange".
Three different manufacturers that are generally accepted as being quite good: https://secure.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/...e_Units_7.html SM75.150 dome Midrange or SM75.150S dome Midrange http://www.zalytron.com/ C44-8 Ceramic 2" Midrange or C79-6 Ceramic 3" Midrange http://www.phlaudio.com/main.html 1040 6.5" midrange or 1500 6.5" midrange Or you could look at the midrange/midbass section of the LDSG for some ideas: http://ldsg.snippets.org/sect-7-mids.php3

Check out Zaph's summary of 3" inch drivers.

JBL 2435HPL, on an appropriate horn, would be a nice start. 3" Be dome, 3" coil, neo magnet, extension to >16k, no breakup to ~14k, response down to maybe 500hz or so on the correct horn with the correct rear chamber, and sensitivity up in the >108dB/watt/1m range, depending on the directivity of the horn. $1400 MSRP (~$250-$300 used on ebay). To get better than this, you'd need to look at the ALE drivers or something else with permendur in the magnetic circuit, and I'm not really sure the ALE would be much better - maybe just different trade offs.

The 12M/4631G is probably quite good, but I don't know much about SS bids, only the woofers and the tweeters.
