Default Passive crossover questions

Hi,

I recently read somewhere that exotic enclosures, like horns and dipoles, are difficult when designing a passive crossover. Why? Does a passive crossover change driver parameters, and so enclosure dimensions?

Secondly, when I use 2 bassdrivers wired in parallel, could I use only 1 crossover for both speakers, or would I need one for each driver?

regards

Erwin

Every passive XO has it's own set of challenges.

If you wire two drivers in parallel or series, you will need to change to value of the components to match the new impedance. You still only one XO.

Thanks for the reply Cal, but one question remains unanswered. Do driver parameters change? I read a paper about loudspeaker design which takes the resistance of the inductor in the crossover into account...

Anybody who knows if Qts and/or Qes change?

when two drivers are in parallel impedance is halved, eg simplistically speaking 4 ohms instead of 8. When impedance changes inductor and capacitor values change.

I think series resistance from inductors can effect qes and hence qts, changing driver parameters a bit, you should take this into account when designing boxes.

With two drivers in parallel you could also run a 2.5way for bafflestep compensation, as less power is wasted than doing it passively.
